I am getting my gears installed this week and was wondering if a finned cover is necessary or just optional. Someone told me i might need it because everything it turning faster now, but I dont tow often and am trying to keep this mod on the cheap.

Honestly, just splurge and get it. Its worth the extra $200, IMO.

You'll thank me when you need to change your diff fluid!

Thats the thing I am never going to need to change it, I hope to get a new truck here in just over a year.
Where are you finding it for 200? All ive seen are like 275 or more. Also is there a cheaper aftermarket cover besides the mag one.

Your supposed to change the fluid after 500 miles with new gears.

4WP got me my cover, they only charged me $200 for it on the receipt.

Then why are you putting money into this one if it is just going to be a 'lost cause' in a year?

Here's the thread where I did mine:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=292706

Same one as Thump's...paid $213 shipped, but they were having a sale.

Mostly did it for looks, coolness factor as well..

because that is still one more year and I am tired of this thing being a dog, thats also why I am trying to do this mod on the cheap. One more year is a long time for me (i really like this truck) most of my cars before lasted less then a year.

Who cares! It's his money. Why is everyone around here so concerned with other peoples lives and the decisions they make?

I would buy one of these myself. The fins on the Mag Hytec are nice for additional cooling, but the rear axle isn't something that has many problems associated with heat. The cover in the link I posted attaches to your differential bearing caps and adds structural strength to your rear axle. With new gears and large tires you're transferring a lot of torque through the rear axle, so this should help hold everything together. Plus, it has a drain hole and an extra fill hole.

If this is legit, then that is a good price for that type of cover. JDM wants 4 bills for theirs.

Does anyone know how to do the front gears? I know for the rear you have to pull the axle shafts but how do you do the front? Does it require pulling the axles as well which would mean taking the front suspension apart to pull the half shafts/CV axles? How much dissassembly is required to do the front gears?

Yea, get the Mag-Hytec it has a drain plug and a Dipstick. looks sharp as hell too. You have to change the Fluid after you run the gears about 500-1000 miles. Dont even mess with buying a cover for the front, no one will ever see it unless you have a solid axle front like the super dutys...which you dont have on your F-150.

If you have to ask, then if i were you i would let a professional handle it. its not as easy as remove and replace, you have to set the lash on the gears to make them line up correctly. Ian on Extreme 4X4 makes it look sooooo easy.
