Reverse lock out on transmission?
Reverse lock out on transmission?
Do our trucks have a reverse lockout so that if the truck is moving and for some unknown reason gets shifted into reverse, it will not destroy the transmission? Thanks in advance

I tried this in a test vehicle for a parking pawl test. The truck would not shift into park or reverse when moving in a forward gear above X miles per hour. I don't remember what the exact speed was, but for some reason about 10MPH sounds familliar. I wouldn't try this in my own vehicle, but this is what the test criteria called for and it worked. This was in about 2002 before the 2004 trucks were released, so my memory is a little hazy, but from what I remember is that when you did physically shift into reverse or park when above 10MPH in a forward gear the truck just stalled.
2004 F150 4.6L 2v 4R70W/E
60mph 4th gear into reverse on the street. The rear tires locked up, engine died, threw it back into neutral, scrubbed about 20mph. Tried to start it in neutral (while rolling), wouldnt start. Pulled over, it was having a tough time turning over, finally turned over and i was off on my merry way. That was with 2500 miles on the truck, i didnt have any problems untill i traded it in with 22k miles on it.

I did this once as well on my 06. Was going somewhere in the 20s. Truck stalled immediatly. was scared to start it back up and put into gear. Foreward gears fine, no vibration, reverse gear fine, no vibration. Got my heart speed back down to normal, and drove around a little until I had satisfied myself that things continued to work properly. Wouldn't do it too many times though.

Are you guys really that oblivious to everything. Usually when somebody asks a question it is usually because they have had this happen to them or somebody they know, and are seeking more information about it. It is not a question about why somebody would want to do this, but rather, I wanted to know if our trucks were equipped with this technology just in case this situation happened to me, and as one can obviously see, that it has happened to a few people.
----So my next question is, how can you tell if there is damage done to the transmission?

Several years ago, I was running a friends T Bucket through the quarter. He forgot to tell me the reverse lock out was broken on the ratchet shifter. At 95, I slapped the shifter to hit 3rd, it went to reverse. The wheels locked up, it took to the air, jumped a curb, round and round in a field, then back out on the pavement. The only damage was 3 tires peeled off the rims, a chunk out of one rear wheel, a lot of dirt on the engine and in the bucket, and my messed up pants. A picture is in my gallery.
