Scalloping on outside of tires
Scalloping on outside of tires
I have 33x13 Nitto TG on 18x9 Helo's and I am seeing scalloping on the outside of the tires. It is more noticable on the driver side (rear tires are good). There is maybe 3K miles on the tires, set at 43psi, 2 alignments were done after installing my Bilstien 5100 2" lift struts because I noticed one of the tires still looked toed. Seems like I have my ducks in a row but I dont want any premature wear on the still new rubber. Any ideas what the problem may be??? The only thing I like scalloped are my potatos. Thanks.
Yep. Check your alignment. I had this start to happen on my Dakota when I got new tires. I couldn't figure out why it was "sawedging" or "scalloping" the tires. So I brought it to my local shop and they aligned it. I found out they were toed in by a very small amount. But it handled and drove a lot better after that. Not to mention it evenly wore the tires again. Took a little while to get rid of what it did to the tire... but now it's fine.
Edit:
I know this doesn't really apply to the F150... but I was told that there should be a fractional (very small) amount of toe in on RWD vehicles? And on front wheel drive vehicles they should be toed out a very small amount... is this true?

Thanks guys. Well I had the same Ford stealership adjust the alignment twice and it seems to still be off due to the sawtoothed or scalloped outter tread. My truck will be on a trailer headed to TX tommorrow(me driving from NC to TX Friday, yuck!) so I guess I will have one of the local shops or stealerships in El Paso try and correct what my dealer could not twice. Check you all out later from the Lonestar state
On your way through, dip south to the south side of Houston, use it as an excuse to visit the Johnson Space Center (I promise I'll wave!) and go to Bensons on Texas Highway 3 about a mile south of NASA Parkway.
