Blue Smoke

I have a 2005 F-150 with 31,000 miles on it. I have the 5.4 motor and 4 wheel drive. With the price of gas I only drive it a couple days a week. The last few times I fired it up it puffed blue smoke for several seconds. Is this anything to be concerned about?

Blue smoke means burning oil. Did you use the correct weight oil at your last oil change? How long does the vehicle have to sit without running before it will smoke at startup.

Drop it off at the dealer and let them handle it, there is nothing more to do if you still have the warranty.

My last oil change was done by the Dealer so I would assume yes on the right weight. Normally I drive it every couple days no more than 72 hours of sitting before I drive it again. With that litle miles on it I would not think it would be burning oil

Blue smoke is burning oil, black smoke is excess fuel, and white smoke is water or antifreze.

The fuel rail will hold pressure for days, weeks, or even months after you turn the vehicle off. Maybe you have a leaking injector that's just taking that long to accumilate enough gas on top of the piston to smoke at startup. Plus, I have heard of some of the 2004 F-150's having injector issues.

If it's going to have to sit at the dealership for 3 days before it will smoke at startup I would have them come to your house to see it or video tape it and take it to them.

Every brand new truck I started at the dealership before I bought my truck blew some smoke for a minute or so (it was like 70 outside, so not cold). My truck blows at least a puff every time it starts cold (even in our low 80s summer mornings). Are you sure this isn't just what I consider the normal F-150 thing (which is probably just condensation)?

mine does the same thing. I just assumed that it was just some condensation in the exhaust

Yeah, it is normal, but he's referring to seeing blue smoke which means burning oil.

Cadmaster,

Double check and make sure that it is blue smoke you are seeing and not your eyes playing tricks on you. If the problem persists check your oil level and look for any leaks.
