(Quinten?) Oil Pump Problem?

My truck on start up sounds like the oil is not reaching the cam and pistons before they start pumping. This mainly happens on cold start-ups when the oil has drained to the bottom. I had the oil changed today and then started up immedietly afterwards and it knocked really bad so I shut it off. Then when I started it up afterwards it sounded fine with no knocking. My guess is the oil pump is not working properly, to make the oil reach the cam and pistons before they start doing theyre job. Does anyone else have a suggestion of what it might be?

I always use a silicone anti-drain back valved MC 820 on my oil changes with only one issue two changes ago. I prefer these because the oil is already well past the filter, and I never had an issue before. The one oil change caused a bad knock on start-up for about 3-4 seconds. I did not like the sound of it, so I changed the oil again after 500 miles. After that, I did not have any knock at all. I assumed that the valve in that MC 820 was not sealing properly, and allowing the oil to drain back down. The only thing I changed was the oil filter, so I am certain that was it. MC filters are the recommended filter, and many people here recommend it because of the great anti-drain back valve. I think that it will be a one-off, but I was never 100% sure that was it. Good Luck.

What oil filter are you using? Fram? If not using one with a good anti-drainback valve, you will get the lifter noise on startup. Best ones seem tob the MC FL-820S, Purolator, and Wix. May be others.
Be sure to fill the filter before you put it on when you do a change. you can get about half a quart in it without it spilling. That will limit the amount of lifter noise.

I'd bet its a oil filter problem as well. . like everyone else, I want to know what filter you're using.

I had the same problem with the Fram filter on my 2004 F150.

I'm not sure exactly what brand the oil filter it is but I know it is yellow and the part # is PZ42. I got under there to look at the brand and I can't see it, and im not taking it out untill next oil change. I'm thinking fram is orange. I get my oil changed at Kwik Kar.

I've heard some that sound absolutely awful starting up dry. Some, not so bad. I use Motorcraft filters on my truck and I get no rattling or clattering on cold start or on dry start up after an oil change, and I don't fill the filter up before screwing it on. I'd ditch that no name filter before worrying about anything else.

I think the penzoil filters are made by fram.

Anyone know of the best place to get a Motorcraft oil filter for our trucks? I think i'm just going to buy 3 or 4 of them and start making them put them on when they change my oil.
