Brake pad replacement questions

OK, I have new pads and rotors ready for install. Also got a Hayne's Repair manual. Looking through the manual, it says when you replace the pads, you have to replace the "V" pin and the caliper sliders. Is this absolutely necessary? If so, where can I get replacement "V" pins and caliper sliders since the pads I bought didn't come with either of those. DId a search, and don't remember seeing anything about this. Thanks in advance.

Could the V pin be a cotter pin? Mine is a 4x2 and different, but that is the only thing I can think of that might be it. I didn't replace anything extra, not even the cotter pin.

the v pin gos from one pad across the rotor the the other. its actually an anti rattle spring. youll be ok just reusing the old hardware as long as it appears to be in good shape.

I just swapped out my front pads and rotors. Very easy. Remove the tire and remove the two bolts from the caliper. Swap in the new pads, I reused the vpins since they were in good condition. Put the rotor on, bolt the caliper on and I was done. I never even touched my slider pins. I've put about 1000 miles on so far and they work better than ever. Very happy with my Wagner Thermos.

Blue, you should always replace a cotter pin if you take it out. Its a major safty device that shouldnt be skimped out on.

But yeah just throw the new pads in there, should be good to go. Check the rotor for glazing or irregular wear. Might want to have it cut while the truck is tore down.

You sound like a trained Techie, Patrick. I have cotter pins on my Mustang that have been reused for 42 years! The older pins are better than the new stuff! I might have used a new on on my truck when I replaced the rotors, but didn't have anything that big.

i believe you on the older stuff. They just dont make stuff like they used to huh?
