What's the line from Forest Gump "stupid is as stupid does" or something like that.
Take the complete strut out and have someone with a good spring compressor do the work.
And this is from somebody that use to have to use a cheap spring compressor and got hit in the chest by a spring from a Cadillac.

It didn't seem like it because you had the weight of the truck helping you release the energy out of the spring. Put a compressor on it and squeeze that spring down by hand, you will have a whole new respect for the power stored in those coils, especially if it breaks free and pops you in the jaw.
