An A-B-C extinguisher will work on most any type of fire, but the powdery residue damages exposed electronics. A halide extinguisher does not one type is called a halitron. I am required to have those in my telecommunications office to reduce the damage to the equipment. I dont know if a residue comes out and dont know if they would work in an outdoor environment. Of course you are not going to find those at your local NAPA either.

I've seen this Halon kit where a professional installs tubing in various locations with heat sensors for detecting fire, and what it does is it automatically deploys the fire extinguishing system. It also has a button on the dash you can press if you need to manual deploy it.

Downside to it is that is costs $$$$. And lot of 'em.

I work in the IT field and these Halon suppression systems are used in many server rooms. One client I work at had a discharge based on a faulty sensor, no actual fire. The cost to refill the halon: $60,000. Part of that though is the environmental damage fee.

Me too. It would be a good excuse to get a new truck.

Well.......you can get Halon cheaper than $60,000. We had it in the engine room of our boat. The unit is one piece with a built in sprayer head. It looks mostly like any extinguisher, just has a heat sensor and sprayer in the head.

After reading about the first coilpack fire, I put my extinguisher under the seat, near the jack. Last thing I want is to be on the news, causing a traffic jam.

I am not talking about a perm mounted system like in server rooms and telecom offices or even in John Force's funny car. I am talking about a portable fire extinguisher just like any other you have seen. The contents however, do not damage electronics.

Halon has been replaced by FM200 any newer setup will have an FM200 system. Halon is ozone depleting and no longer allowed. Legacy systems sould be grandfathered in.

I bought the B_C rated extinguishers from Wal*Mart...made by Kidde. $9.65 each. Rated for grease, gasoline, or electrical. Yep, they do leave the white powdery residue, but they work. That's what I used to put out my fire. This was prolly the 4th time I've needed to use a vehicle fire extinguisher in my 40 years of driving, but the first time on my own vehicle.

One time I pulled up beside a young fella, who had crawled UNDER his Mustang...trying to put out flames with a hand full of weeds from the road side. His date was sitting in the passenger seat at the time. Crazy. Fortunately for them, I had a bottle extinguisher in my truck. Couple of shots, and the fire was out. Then I towed him home. Sans the extinguisher, there could have been REAL trouble.

Buy one for your truck, guys...they're cheap insurance.

if my engine was on fire.....i dont know if i would want to approach it since the fire could easily hit the fuel line and then to the tank.

Fully engulfed cars won't explode. I have watched many burn to the ground in my line of work. The only explosion will be from the tires bursting. If my truck caught on fire I would have no reservations about taking the time to put it out.
