How Fog Lights help... when there's fog?
 

Hi

Are the Fog Lights suposed to help us see more when there is fog? if so...? how do they achieve that? is it only on the Night... or day? etc.

'Sposed to be the lower lights. Lower to the ground will give more illumination. That's why high beams are never recommended when foggy.

Also amber colored lenses are recommended for true fog lamps. They don't reflect as much light as the clear lenses/bulbs.

They do help a little since they are lower to the ground. Typically the fog is at least a few feet above the road or whatever.

they just mean you got the more expencive truck they dont help at all.... but i still want some!!!

I just added some to my truck, and it makes the front look alot nicer...

lets see some pics did you go painted bumper or chrome??? i want a painted one...

I went with the rectangular 04 05 chrome one, and wired it up like it would come from the factory. I will make a before and after thread tomorrow..

the only way the fog lights really help in the fog is if you get the amber colored ones they actually can cut through the fog, but what the good thing about the factory foglights is, is that they add more light to the road when in dar areas, they also allow you to see more of whats on the side of the road.

Fog lights are yellow. Driving lights are what comes on our trucks. They are low to the ground, but produce a wider illumination pattern than the headlights for added visibility.

So, the "FogLights" our trucks have are the same kind of light but located lower and with diferent light aiming range.

fog lights are what I got lol

I had fog lights on my Ranger and I liked them, so when I got an F150, I made sure to get the fog lights on it. For me, they seem to light directly in front of the vehicle more and a bit more out to the sides...So at night, while you're driving slowly, they could help you avoid potholes or small obstacles IMO. I always see guys with them that don't have them turned on. Mine are always on...well, have my light switch set to Auto with the fog lights on, so as soon as it's dark, they all come on automatically.

Actually, "fog" refers to the beam pattern - not just the color. A fog pattern light utilizes a wide, flat pattern that doesn't extend very far forward of the vehicle. The theory is that if you mount a fog beam low enough, it will shine under the fog. No need to go too far forward because the fog will disperse it. As for color, there's an urban legend that says yellow works better. Several recent studies have proven that to be incorrect. (Don't tell that to the French though.)

The other major type of beam pattern you will see is a "driving" pattern. This us generally a much narrower pattern that reaches much further down the road. As you might guess, this pattern is much better for seeing farther down the road, but pretty useless in fog. Then there's "pencil" beams, but I digress.

What comes on our trucks is actually more of a fog beam - particularly in the '04-'06 rectangular lights - not that housing shape has anything to do with pattern. Pull your truck up in front of a wall and turn your lights on. You'll see what I mean.
