I did a search but did not really find what I needed. I am trying to find out the exact noise the cam phaser's make. My truck out of the blue on the way home from work this morning started making a ticking sound from my passenger side. I have 62,750 miles on the truck so I thought it was my cam phaser. It is really loud at start up and just a annoying tick while driving(almost sounds like an exhaust leak). I will check to make sure a header gasket didnt blow out but it really seems like I can feel it hitting something when I start the truck up with my hand on the oil fill tube that that is where the sound is coming from. It seems that when I am under load the ticking gets louder then when I am coasting it is barely heard. Any help would be nice. thanks.

 

My cam phaser would "knock" at idle, it was a deeper sound than a tick. It wouldn't do it when I drove or if I revved the engine at all. The best place to hear it was near the passenger side wheel well. I guess the best way to describe the sound it made was that it sounded like someone would hit the engine with a rubber mallet.

 

ok figured it out. The gasket blew out at the number one cylinder for the headers. Good news is that it is just a gasket, bad news is nobody as gaskets around here, going to have to wait until monday to find replacements, bad bad news is it is the @#$%^%&*$#@%$# passenger side header........

 

I'm trying to find the website where I found gaskets for the 5.4..... made of copper I'm pretty sure..

Maybe it was in a magizine.
