I didn't want to get an intake because of the whistleing and having to take apart the stock box. I just bought a K & N drop in filter and called it a day.

'cept I have the Airaid.

Josiah, what steps do you take to keep mud and water out of your AF1? I've been thinking about getting one of these before I go playing around: Pre-Filter

I'm kind of in a love hate thing with my K&N. The power is great, and so is the WOT sound, but that annoying sucking whistle sound was old after the first day, and I'm usually worried about it sucking up some water or having a leak somewere. Don't think I'll be taking it off anytime soon though, I can't hear it with the windows up, but when the windows are down I can hear it more than I like.

I had the AF1, and while I did not hate it I just couldn't stand the noise. I bought mine for towing a trailer thinking the extra HP would help... wrong I didn't notice any difference with it on or not. The biggest reason was that while towing your hard into the throttle all the time, especially in the mountains so its alway loud to the point of annoying, even my kids said its to loud.
Around town its fine, cruising is okay but towing, don't get one unless you like it loud.

When you guys say their loud what do you mean? Is it a whistle or just a sucking of air sound. I have been thinking about a cai and just want to understand what you mean by loud before ordering.

Its just a loud drone sound, not a whistle or sucky sucky sound.
maybe some can describe it better. either way it was annoying on 16 hour trips.

It was a loud, resonant drone. It was so loud that you had to raise your voice to talk over it. To talk over it you nearly had to yell in the cab to be heard and understood. I had the AF1 too and got rid of it for the same reason. Too loud while towing.

Great posts, thanks a bunch. I was thinking about the Volant until I started reading negative posts about it so started thinking AF1. Well now I'm hearing it's loud and the Volant is quiet if mounted correctly and lined with Dynamat. Has anyone lined the AF1 box with Dynamat? Thanks for posting mkinttrim and all the rest of you. I like your ram-air kit mkinttrim. I'm leaning towards the Volant now with my own ram-air kit.

Volant

I know nothing about the AF1 besides good talk, I have the Volant on my 05 5.4 and I love it (even know I was thinking of tryin different). I mean it gave me noticable power and yes it does have a Cab drone (doesnt sound bad, its just not stock and quite).. Does anyone know about the AF1 vs Volant vs the new outlaw when it comes to dyno power gain?
