4x4 low Problem

I have a 2004 FX4.

I am experiencing a 4x4 low problem.

1. When I want to backup in 4x4 low (straight) and then do a left or right turn, the truck will chug while turning.

2. When I want to backup in 4x4 low and turn left or right from a stop, the truck will chug or not move at all depending on how hard of a turn it is.

I took the truck to a dealer and he confirmed the problem and found it interesting. He stated that he tested a new 2006 FX4 that is on the lot and it did the same thing. He stated that it is a design problem and don't make those turns.

I took the truck to another dealer and he confirmed the problem and that the truck is biding up.

He still has the truck to find the cause.

Has anyone have or had the same problem??

Why in gods name are you engaging 4x4 on blacktop!?

You know that will break something... and you are wondering why it chugs... it probably binded something up and messed it up.

I have owned plenty of 4x4's not to do this. I've never engaged 4x4 even on merely lightly snowed pavement because you could always run into an area where it is clear.

Mine doesn't do that. I only engage 4L in serious snow.... like in the Sierra in Feb. almost 18" on the ground. Didn't even really need it then either.......Sounds broken to me......but then again, never tested like you and the dealer......

YOu said the truck chugs. Can you explain it a little more. Does chuggin mean the truck
1. moves backward very slowly
2. seems to have to spool up like it takes a while for the clutch to engage

You mentioned this happens in reverse. Does it not do it in forward gear?

I'm willing to bet you already broke a hub testing that on dry pavement. I nearly cracked my good friend for doing that as a joke...who the **** messes around like that. I've been through hubs like undies :]

offtopic but bud8817, how much were those fox shocks. They look great on your truck, wish I went with silver.

Never do that!

4Hi or 4Lo is meant for snow, ice, or mud - ONLY. Never dry pavement, and by the way rainy (wet) pavement doesn't count either.

4WD is not the same as AWD. If you want to be able to power both axles on every kind of surface you bought the wrong type of vehicle.

You can always throw a true differential up front to be able to do that. I wonder what the harley's are running (from the tcase on out).

People that respond that they would never use 4x4 low on pavement must never had worked on a farm or owned a boat.

I haved used 4x4 low many times to;

1. Tow a hay wagen or stock trailer up & down hilly roads.

2. Pull a boat out of a steep launch.

and never had a failure later.

Now most manufacturers do advise not to drive in 4x4 High on dry pavement.

It's fine to use it on pavement, but you're an idiot if you think drivetrain bind is nothing to worry about. In other words, take it out as soon as you have to make any sort of turn.

X2 on josiah's post above!

use it if you need it IN A STRAIGHT LINE, but if you need to turn...get rid of it....or put in an order for the new hubs that Josiah so loves to ruin!...haha

Engaging 4WD on pavement is not the best idea, but it's also not what everyone makes it out to be. Now turning on pavement in 4WD is a big no-no. Regardless, the description you are giving us is making it very hard to diagnose. . kind of sounds normal if you ask me.
