I usually average about 15.5 mpg during my normal drive to work...about half of some stop and go traffic and the other half expressway driving. But on one trip that was 90% expressway to move stuff for my sister I averaged 19mpg. That trip used up over 3/4 of a tank of fuel. My mods are listed in my sig....cai, exhaust, tuner.

You guys that are reporting higher than 16mpg, are you going off dash read out or are you figuring it out the old fashioned way? just wondering..
Doing it the old fashioed way I'm seeing about 14.9 average..

I used the Avg. MPG readout on my Edge Evo tuner. It is frightfully accurate.

Just filled up today. Went through my first tank with this truck and got 11.5 MPG.

That was 'testing' it out too . MANY times with the pedal to the floor.

Running Rich??

I have a 07' FX2 extended cab short bed with about 12,000 miles on her. It has the 20" wheel option. I drive about 150 miles a day and average 16.5 mpg at either 75 mph or stopped in traffic.

I have noticed the exhaust pipe is a little sooty (rich condition). I took it to the Stealer and the service writer said that they all do that. It even smells rich a start up... Anyone experience this condition??

Mine does the same thing. Keeps my stainless tip sooted up constantly.

It's caused me to start looking at these trucks as I get behind them. Some of them have the telltale soot and some don't... although the ones that do are the majority.

No wonder these things don't get better mileage, they're blowing a lot of fuel right out the tailpipe.

The 4.6L that I had last never had this problem. The tailpipes stayed as clean as a whistle.

I have that same exact truck (even same color!!) And I have NEVER seen MPG's like that! I'm happy with 15 MPG! Good thing for me is I get to drive my truck like I stole it everyday and my work pays for all the gas! I did a nice little burnout today since I'm looking to get some new rubber in the next few weeks. Either way good luck with your goal, but it just seems too far away for a driver like me.

The best mileage I got out of my truck was during the summer; 15.5 mpg; during the freezing cold of this past winter I was getting 12.5 mpg average per tank. I got the Edge programmer this February and using Level 2 with 87 octane I'm now getting 16-17 mpg average on a tank. Last time I filled up I averaged exactly 17mpg and its a hell of a lot more fun to drive now too!!! Oh, I'm not relying on the Edge's ampg either, I'm calculating it myself, but its usually pretty close to what the Edge reads out. It seems like if you do a lot idling it will mess it up though.

16.5 is very nice mileage I get around 14 mixed driving 1MPG less than what FORD says I should get for city driving. Just highway driving I get 18 and I just have a reg cab 4x2 with 3.55 gears.

I got 20mpg before i got the supercharger installed. The exhaust pipe was also spotless. after 30k miles the inside of the exhaust was so clean you could still see the discolored seam from it being welded tubing. Then again the engine was running with hot plugs, and even some preignition from running the hotter plugs.

The exhaust sooted up in under a week from having a cooler thermostat, cooler plugs, and a richer mixture.

Just to update everyone with some not-so-relevant information: I had to pull the racecar to the track this weekend, and with 240 towing miles and 50 unloaded miles, the truck averaged 13.9mpg! I was stoked - expecting to see somewhere in the 11s or worse. Just filled up so hopefully sometime this weekend I'll have my first updated RELEVANT mpg comparison. Stay tuned!

I'd offer up pictures, but I don't have a digital gauge since mine isn't a Lariat. However, I'd suggest calculating the results manually - too much room for error using the stock gauge.

I couldn't agree more! So far my investment is very minimal and I'm confident that the results are going to be very positive - we'll see!

I'd say an estimated 70% city and 30% highway. Of course this ratio will change with every tank, so this won't be the most scientific comparison ever. I guess everyone has a differnt opinion on what information is useful - just take this thread for whats its worth to you.

I don't have any dash readings - I'm doing it the old fashioned way: miles travelled/gallons used.

Mine doesn't smell rich at startup, but the exhaust is a little sooty just like every other car in my driveway. It's just a sign of a slight rich condition, which isn't a bad thing. I'd much rather have the tune of the truck err on the rich side rather than the lean side! If it annoys you to the point of demanding it stops, check out a tuner - they should lean the mixture enough to prevent soot and still be safe enough.

Very nice! I'm a leadfoot at heart myself - luckily I have a Camaro that I drag race and beat the living snot out of, so I can be tame while driving the truck and not get too many urges to stab the throttle.

Ahhhh, modding for better MPGs... give it up folks. You'll never recoup your mods at the pump. Unless gas goes up to $5/gal, then you might recoup it. I get 15-16 with my lead foot in mixed city/hwy driving. Personal best was 20mpg with what must have been a strong, strong tailwind from a trip up north. Never saw it before and never saw it after. I did the math to backup the trip computer just to be certain. The built-in mpg meter in the data center is dead-nuts accurate assuming you reset it after each fill up. Otherwise its a running calculation and not accurate for that tank.

I think we need to ban MPG threads. WTF am I even typing a reply for? Must want to pump up the post count a tad since it hasn't moved in months...

I've been averaging about 13.5 with mixed driving. I do a lot of in-town driving with occassional highway driving which helps to boost the mpg up for me.
