Whirring Noise, 2005 4x2
Whirring Noise, 2005 4x2
Noticed a whirring noise and had it checked 4000 miles ago. Thought it was a wheel bearing, the dealer said they were fine. It has gotten louder and really gets louder when making a left turn or curve. Went in for another oil change, asked them to check it again. Came back with "it's the left front hub and needs replacing. Will aso need to turn the right rotor so they will match." Estimate $500.
My questions are, doesn't that still sound like a bearing? Why would they turn the other rotor, how will that match them? What are the difficulties involved in me changing both rotors? Thanks for any advice. There is 44,650 miles on the truck.

A hub and bearings already shot in 44k miles?
I might be able to see that if the truck got pounded on frequently or if you were running a wide/heavy wheel-tire combo, but not just running the factory stuff under normal driving conditions.
The last time I heard that sound on a 4x2, it had actually gotten into my spindle.

thats weird.....usually when the sound gets louder turning left its the right wheel bearing as that is the side the weight is transferd too. id get that checked again so they dont put one one and still hear the same sound and sell you 2 cause "they were both bad"

Thought I would post a wrap up on this. I purchased one hub/rotor assembly for 142.50 plus tax and replaced the left one. If you tackle this, be sure to have a 36mm deep socket as that is what is required to remove the hub nut. Had to go get one after starting the job. Installed the new one, had no trouble getting old hub off. Went for a drive and noise was still there. Now I am really irritated, as I tried to tell them it was the right side, not the left. So had to order another assembly, came in the next day. Replaced the right side went for a drive and bingo, quiet as can be. Brakes work perfect, so I was ready for the 500 mile trip. The noise from the bearing had gradually gotten louder and I had no idea how bad it was until I fixed it. Thanks to Patman for emailing instructions, it was a piece of cake, once I got the socket. Cost was $285 plus tax for both sides, dealer wanted almost $1000 plus tax.
P.S. I used Raybestos rotor assemlies as this was what the parts place carries. They appear heavier made than the OEM.
