Yes, a little coolant loss over a few miles is normal.

Since it's Monday and I've been bombed for 12+ hours by dumb questions it's my time to pay it forward what coolant should we be using to top off the reservoir? My first guess is orange Motorcraft, but honestly I haven't looked it up in the book.

No, no, not orange. Motorcraft "Gold Premium Coolant," part number VC-7-A.

Orange coolant, Motorcraft # VC2 and VC3 were only used in the '99+ Mercury Cougar and the electric Ranger. Don't mix gold with orange or green under any circumstances.
