Bug Shield...

Anyone have a bug shield installed on their 2004+ F150? I noticed in the instructions online you're supposed to remove the grill...Just curious if it all goes back together nicely.

I've only had my truck about 2 weeks now and I noticed there was a little stone chip in the front of the hood already so I'm thinking about adding some protection.

yea it goes together well- be sure not to over-tighten the bolts or else you will dimple the surround...

Its a very easy install.....took about 12 mins and all you do is mess with bolts. the grill comes off as a whole assembly and is just held on with 6 or so bolts.

hrmm... Looks like I'll probably pick one up then. Do you think they do a good job of protecting the hood and windshield? I had one on my ranger only because I got it for free - I think it takes away from the look of the front end...but I've been paying attention and it looks like about 1 out of every 2 trucks out there have one.

they do a decent job on the hood, especially the leading edge- as for the windshield- not really, we've got high profile trucks- stuff's bound to hit it... bout to get windshield #3, but i also live on gravel roads, and where in the winter they put sand and gravel down instead of salt...

I installed the Chrome-Mini Bug Shield myself after two weeks of owning the truck, just loosen and remove all grill bolts, Install, & tighten back up, not too tight however! Simple Simmon!

You really do not have to pull the grille off. Just loosen the bolts and pull the grille out enough to slip the shield between the grill and the hood. Just make sure you loosen all the bolts, including the ones on the L bracket.

I got mine from Pepboys for around $48. It does a decent job of protecting the front edge of the hood but nothing else. Also make for a little more work when cleaning the hood but I can live with it.

I would recommend it. I have always had them, the black or smoke ones look nice with any color, and they do help protect your hood (but like someone else mentioned not your windshield to any large degree, it's just too high).

Oh, there also used to be two styles, high-profile and low-profile. I heard some not-so-good things about the high-profile, like wind noise and such, so I would suggest low-profile if the two options still exist (bought mine in early '04).
