Cruise Control Problem

The cruise control in my 2004 F150 with the 5.4 has become erratic lately and before I take it to the dealer, I just wanted to check and see if anyone has had this problem fixed. When going down a slight downgrade, the cruise will start surging pretty badly. Feels like you're pushing down on the pedal and then letting off repeatedly. When going down a steeper hill, the truck will sometimes slow down 5 or 6 mph below the setpoint and then the cruise will punch it at the bottom of the hill to speed back up.

Anyone seen this one?

Mine does that occasionally...only after I installed my Edge. I figured it had something to do with the responsiveness that the edge added. I like it. It usually takes only 2-4 mph depending on the strain of the engine to downshift

same problem here....I thought it was the Edge too. There's a place on my way home from work that it does it EVERY single time I drive my truck to work....it drives me crazy!

I think I fixed this one myself. The dealer couldn't replicate the problem (no way they drove it with cruise on down a hill!) and just reflashed the computer. Of course, this did nothing .

The problem turned out to be a dirty (sticky) throttle body. When going down a hill, the CC would try to give it a little throttle and the throttle plate would stick shut. It would throw in a little more power to the stepper motor and the plate would come unstuck and overshoot with too much throttle. I cleaned the throttle body with a coating safe cleaner and no more problem! I only live about 3 miles from work so the engine hardly gets to temp before its shut down. That probably has a lot to do with the excessive soot in the throttle body. My '97 F150 had a sticky throttle plate once and that's what made me think of it. Hope this helps.
