Looking for Replacement Shocks
Looking for Replacement Shocks
Hi all.
It's been awhile since I last posted. Looking to replace my stock shocks. Already ordered new brakes, wheels and tires and figured I'd go ahead and upgrade my shocks as well. Not being very knowledgeable on the subject, I was looking for help in this area.
I did a quick search and saw Bilsteins and Ranchos seem to be the most common replacement shock available for the 04 F-150. I have a Lariat Supercrew 4D. Besides the shocks, is there anything else I need to complete the upgrade? I'm just looking for a smooth comfortable ride. Mostly highway, occasional off road. No lift or any other suspension mods. Trying to keep it economical as well.
Also any recommendations on where I can purchase shocks online.
Thanks for any assist.

I think most people here will tell you Bilstein. They make two kinds....one is a direct replacement (yellow/blue), the others will give you 0-2" of lift in the front (same affect as a leveling kit).
Toguncustomz.com is probably the best price you will find. You can either order through them, or they sell on ebay too. Their price on ebay is cheaper, so I just called them and asked if they would give me the ebay price and they did.
As for installation...install the rears yourself, its just two bolts on each side. Take it to a shop to install the fronts (unless you are skilled working with spring compressors). Then just get an alignment and you are set.

I will try to link you to an old thread that I started when I installed my Bilstiens. The links on the last post do not work anymore.

Good info
Thanks for the responses. I'll look into the Bilsteins. I won't need to get anything else besides the shocks, right? Also, if I don't like Bllue and yellow dust boot covers, is there a way to replace those?
I just bought 4 Rancho RSX shocks from samsoffroad.com for $146 shipped. They have buy 3 get one free right now. The new shocks are a drastic improvement over the stockers. Oh yea, and they aren't blue and yellow.
FirsttimeFord,
I like the price of the Ranchos a little better. If I order the set of four, do the send the right front and rear?
How big of a difference in quality is there between the Ranchos and the Bilsteins?

Not sure the difference between Ranchos and Bilsteins, I heard the Bilsteins ride too stiff. Given that these RSX are already pretty stiff, I wouldn't want anything stiffer. For the price couldn't go wrong. Good luck.
