Cracked Tires

I was rotating the tires on our 2005 F-150 SuperCrew FX4 and I noticed some cracks in our BF Goodrich tires. Our truck sits outside year round and gets sun in the morning and afternoon. But I have always treated the tires with Armor All (although not in the last month).

They only have 17,000 miles on them. Do we have any recourse with BF Goodrich? Is that DOT number the date they were built?

part of the problem is using armor-all. that stuff is notorious for drying up and increasing sun damage. Does the truck drive or just sit there?

I've never used tire shine...that's what happens to tires when you use it. The last four of the dot code -- 3704 means the tires were manufactured the 37th week of 2004.

Michelin is always very helpful when dealing with oe tire adjustments. All you have to do is dig up the Michelin warranty booklet that came with your truck, call the 1800 number, describe your case, get a pending number -- this number will be your phone number...then stop by with it to any Michelin tire dealer nearby and they'll handle the rest. If they're the 275/65/18's, expect a couple days at least for that company to get them in though...and I would guess that you may get the new tires at 50% if you're that worried. Technically, from what I see in your pictures, those are safe and would pass any state inspection I've ever heard of.

What were you inflating those tires too? Oh, and if you talk to BF Goodrich tires they'll just feed you some B.S. line to wriggle out of giving you a new set.

We use the truck mostly for towing in the summer....about twice a month. My wife drove it to work every day this past winter. So it's not like it just sits there.

We've watched the tire pressures very carefully. 35 psi.

If Armor All is so bad, how come Guru Reports picked it as the #1 tire shine/protectant? I don't think that's what caused it. Did garscott use Armor All on his tires? Doubt it. (he says they look the same as ours)

I guess I'll be calling BF Goodrich tomorrow to see what they have to say. The tires are still fine to drive on IMHO. But I want to notify them of the problem in advance....not when it's too late. I'm hoping that they won't get any worse over the next few years and we just won't worry about it.

BTW, the inside edges of the tires don't show any signs of cracking, so it's got to be sun related. Good to know that someone else is having the same "problem". Thanks garscott.

The BFG tires are the problem - not the tire dressing. Many of the same tires are showing the same cracking problems. Go back to the dealer first. They replaced all 4 of mine no charge under warranty. The tires are defective.

Look like defects to me.
When my tires get old and cracked it happens near the rim and the cracks run up and down not across the tire like that.

I don't see cracks till the tire is five or six years old.

Same thing here, I just checked the NHTSA web site, no complaints listed on these tires, recalls or defects.

Tire material problems, not the shine products.

Mine are the exact same way. Let me know what happens if you head to the dealer.

I guess I'm not sure who to call on this? Should I just look up BF Goodrich on the internet and try and get a phone number that way?

Or is there something with our factory manual? (I need to go out and look)
