I was under the impression that FX4 was a trim level all by itself on the new body styles. This truck, however, is a Lariat FX4, like the older models. Was Lariat FX4 briefly available in 2004 and then separated into two different trim levels? Or is this a custom FX4 sticker put on by the owner of the truck? This is not the first time I have seen this...Here's the truck:

You are correct. The FX4 trim is completely separate from the Lariat trim level. Looks like to me that he may have started with the Lariat and placed the FX4 decals. I say this by looking at the chrome surround and a replaced honeycomb grill. Plus I thought that the FX4 had color matched bumpers and this truck has a two-tone paint scheme throughout

 

It was not avaliable. I am guessing they added the decal just for looks. I did this on my ranger. I added the Offroad decal from the 97 F150.

My friend has a 2003 lariat FX4. On the 04+ trucks they seperated them. now you can get the FX4 with the lariat interior, but the lariat can only come in the 4x4 package but not the Fx4 package........i think thats right

 

I think the only way you can get that setup is if you buy a F-250 or F-350.

 

In 2004, the FX4 and Lariat packages were separated into two different packages. The FX4 came standard with the goofy engine and tranny skid plates, a supposed beefier tranny, and the coolest of the gauge packages available. The Lariat came with all the other girly stuff.

The FX4 also had the goofy bar grille and the bumper and lower trim color were DSG on all colors with black being the only possible exception in 2004.

The picture you have here is most likely a Lariat with some $20 FX4 decals.

The "beefier" trannie, 4R75E came with the 5.4, which all FX4s came with. As compared to the 4R70E which came with all 4.6 equipped trucks.
