Half Ton Comparo In Car and Driver

Got the new issue of Car and Driver this weekend, and in it they have a crewcab half ton comparo. Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but did browse the results.

5. Ford F150
4. Dodge Ram
3. Toyota Tundra
2. Nissan Titan
1. Chevy Silverado

Anyone else read the whole thing yet? Granted it is car and driver, and if a BMW had entered anything in the comparo it would have won. That's just how they think. I realize that our beloved blue ovals are due for a remodel soon, but man....5th?

I read the whole thing. They really bashed the f150 because of the small bed on the screw, but you can get the 6.5' bed on it now so that doesn't count IMO. They also claimed it was underpowered... this we already knew. Gas milage was the same on all trucks pretty much, and the toyota was the fastest 0-60 and quarter mile i think. It was a pretty good write up and is definately worth reading.

I know that the Ford is the oldest design now, but that test is crap. At least you can get a true crew cab with the F-150 compared with the Ram. The only reason the Ram has a 6' box is because the crew cab is that much smaller. They don't even offer a Supercab, which there crew basically is. Has anyone ever actually sat in the back of one and compared it to a Chev or Ford. At least with the Ford you have options which suits you best. Thats the problem with these tests, its always apples to oranges.

Amen.

If it's not from Honda, Toyota, Nissan, or any German manufacturer, it's a piece of garbage to them. It's surprising they actually ranked a domestic pickup over the imports.

These guys are never truly unbiased. They sell advertising in their mags. Car, truck, bike of the year? Who cares, they all get their turn because these guys gotta wh**e themselves to ALL the manufacturers.

I'm sure we were all praising them when they had F150 as best for the past 3 years. It's just the natural product cycle. They still rated the interior as best. And I agree they talked about the short bed but never mentioned of a long bed, yet they had the long bed titan. Don't get me wrong I love my F150 but i think the Ram should have been last followed by the titan. I test drove the ram and they are spot on with the Kmart plastic. The interior was shamefull.

Went home and read the entire article. I agree that most of what MT and C&D publish is garbage...however, this time around they outsourced some qualified judges. If C&D took into consideration what these contractors were saying, then yeah...I can see how things played out the way they did. No surprises really. I would have thought that the Toyota would have received higher marks than the Titan. Good read.

PatMan..I'm in west texas.

I'm sure if the F150 was first though we'd all love the magazines yeah granted those magazines comparos sometimes are really unfair but i meen the F150 is outdated, it's no surprise that it's last, wait until the 2009 comparo with the redesigned F150, it will be first again and we'll all love the magazine for it, thats just how it goes.

Im highly surprised the Tundra didnt place better, I need to read the article. I also wouldnt have thought the Titan would be better than the Tundra or Ram? Im curious to know their criteria. As far as the short bed, I like my 5.5ft bed, so that is not a valid argument. And as mentioned the 6.5 bed is available in all trims.

The only thing they can dock the F150 for is the lowest power in the group, and also the lack of a 5 or 6 spd tranny. If the f150 offered a ~350HP+ engine with a 5 or 6spd, theyd be on top. Everything else on the F150 is better IMHO. But the powertrain is a huge deciding factor though. 300HP may have cut it 3-4 yrs ago, but obviously everyone has stepped up the competition big time in the powertrain department.

I believe it was in last month's edition of Popular Mechanics...they did the same crewcab truck test.

1-Nissan Titan
2-Toyota Tundra
3-Chevy Silverado
4-Ford F150 King Ranch
5-Dodge Ram

I don't have that issue here with me right now, but I remember some of the cliffnotes...They asked.."How does the number one selling pickup in America (F-150) finish 4th??? One word...engine." They also stated that if they never left the dragstrip that the Tundra would have been the hands down winner. But they did say that the Ford had one of the nicest interiors.

For what its worth...they test alot of cars and give updates on them...but I've always sensed a bit of foreign car bias from them as well.

My roommate has an 05 dodge 4d 4x4 hemi and the back seat is litterally the same size as my supercab ford. he might have an inch or two more of leg room but that's it. And yes, the interior is all crappy plastic and I can't tell the difference between his leather seats and my brothers' work truck vinly haha. Sure sounds good though...

I dont think its foreign car biased in this case, they laid it out plain as day. The F150 drivetrain is outdated, plain and simple. THeres nothing biased about that. If Ford was to get off their **** and produce a strong motor that could compete with the Toyota, Nissan, etc then the F150 would be top dog.

I was very surprised (but happy) that the new Silverado won Motor Trend's TOTY award and not the Tundra. I don't think the Titan ever scored that one either as I know the F150 beat it in their introduction year...
