I am tryng to understand the whole exhaust/muffler/cats stuff.... i was getting help from Weazel... and i made my own crappy picture on windows paint... Am I missing anything of major importance to undertand the exhaust?

You have them labeled as cats, There are actually 4 of them, 2 on each side, a smaller set right behind the manifolds and 2 larger underneath your cab.

Edit: There is also the O2 sensor connected to one of the cats as well.

 

Actually... her truck is a 2007... her drawing is correct. One cat for each exhaust bank.

Odd, I didnt know they removed 2 of them? Is that just the 2007 or the 2005/6 as well?

 

Don't remember.. either 05+ or 06+.. 2006 and up for sure.

 

Cool... But when you guys talk about glass packs... what does that mean?

Weazel told me the less things that disrupt the pipe the louder it is, hence removing the cats, and muffler... but what are glass packs? Where do they go and what do they do?

 

My '05 has 2 cats.

A glass pack is just a name for a loud muffler. It's just basically a straight pipe with fiberglass in it to provide some sound control. Most people install them because they flow through with little or no restriction and make the exhaust nice and loud. They go in place of the stock mufflers.

So is there a reason why people replace the headers/manifolds? Are the stock ones not good enough?

 

The stock manifolds are a compromise between power, performance and economy. The result is this design makes them very inefficient at moving the exhaust out of the motor. Installing headers improves the exhaust flow by giving each cylinder it's own pipe. A properly tuned header will actually pull the burnt gases out of the cylinder. The pipes come together at the collector which then connects to the exhaust pipe. All this helps the engine to run more efficiently and build more power. An air intake system with a proper header and exhaust can improve power and torque by 15% or more over stock.
