how to determine options via VIN #

hey guys new to the forum, I'm going to be looking at getting a used 05 f150 lariat tonight. I've asked the dealer for a window sticker with the options but the moron salesman couldn't produce one for me. Anyone know a way to find out all the options listed by the vin? I basically want to know if it has the towing package, limited slip, etc. all the stuff the dealership gave me listed generic option packages for this vehicle

thanks!
Kevin

The VIN doesn't reveal such things.
Basically, you can determine body type, drivetrain, engine, where built.
I've heard that dealers can indeed print a window sticker from the VIN.

I realize the vin itself doesn't contain this info, but wondered if ford or some other web site/service would have the records available for research.

I have seen most dealers print out window stickers for used trucks but this guy seems like a lazy moron. kinda sleezy too

nothing will help. You are going to have to look at the truck yourself to figure out all the options. Get a mechanic from the dealer and have him show you around the truck.

Negative.
Ford keeps all such info close to the vest. There is no public data, There have been too many recalls and too many lawsuits to even think of releasing a crumb of information.
Perhaps ins companies can obtain part of the info directly, I don't know how much they really have access to but, the only thing you will find on the internet or anyplace outside of an authorized Ford Dealership is the VIN breakdown.

Well, you gotta figure that if you could access it, so could a lawyer.
Knowledge is power, power is leverage, leverage is lets just settle out of court.

I don't really see how knowing what options a vehicle came with from the factory would increase ford's liability......

if a lawyer is going to go to the trouble of suing FOMOCO he's going to need enough backing hire someone with enough knowledge to figure out what options a truck has by themselves......

It's not knowing the options of a truck,
it's the existence of a conduit with which to gain data.

Even if you had to enter one VIN at a time it could be automated to extract Ford's business data.

I just assume that possible liability is the reason for the secrecy.
It didn't used to be that way.
There is extensive historical data up to 1996, then suddenly nothing.
Policy was changed for some reason.

has anyone registered on ford's online vehicle page "myford"? it asks you for a vin number on registering and checks to make sure that vehicle is not owned by a dealer. it wouldn't let my register with the vin number from the truck I'm looking to buy.

It had been awhile, I forgot my password.

I looked around the features, there was nothing that would tell me I had a factory tow package, etc...

Lariats only had so many options.
Seems like it would simple enough to list them all
then go over the truck checking them off.

Had a friend who bought a used F150 that had the original window sticker in the glovebox.
The sticker showed a 6 disc CD changer.
Lot of good that did.
The cd changer was gone.

yeah, there are a bunch of things that I know it's got. interior wise it has:
power windows,locks seats,mirrors
adjustable pedals
moonroof
climate control
garage door opener
6 disc changer
heated leather seats

as far as running gear I am unsure. it has the 5.4, no reese hitch. If the sales guy doesn't come up with the window sticker tonight I will have to go through it.

what options would there be other than what I got listed?
towing (just the gear ratio? tag on the rear) tranny cooler??
is there a heavy duty option with a higher GVW?

no revkev6 thats the first thing I checked when you posted this - myford will only provide the data from the VIN- but, it does have record of all service/maintenance for the vehicle...

to check your gear ratio, open the front door- on the end of it will be the vin data, and should list the axle code- I've got a B6 which refers to the 3.73LS

19 — 3.55 non-limited slip — F-150
25 — 4.10 non-limited slip — F-150
26 — 3.73 non-limited slip — F-150/Mark LT
27 — 3.31 non-limited slip — F-150
B5 — 4.10 limited slip — F-150
B6 — 3.73 limited slip — F-150/Mark LT
H9 — 3.55 limited slip — F-150
18 = 3.08 non-limited slip — F-150

Ford Motor Customer Service used to provide this type of information -- not sure if they still do.

Give them a call armed with your VIN number. I obtained quite a bit of information about my 2001's build date and such...

Hey, it's worth a shot!
