4 Wheel drive clunk

I have a 2005 F-150 with the 5.4 and 28,000 miles on it. It is clunking when I put it in 4H. Any ideas????????

If you read your manual you will see it WILL clunk when you put it into 4x4

Cool thanks! The only reason I ask is because my 1997 F-150 never made that kind of noise when using 4x4

Just be careful to ease it in

Let off the gas when putting it in or pulling it out.

Mine does it when engaged, after engagement. It especially does it while climbing a hill or something... anyone know what it might be?

Cool

Welll I took the old heap into Ford today to have the 4 wheel looked at. Not only is it clunking, but it is grinding and jumping in and out of 4 wheel. Any thought? I will follow up with Ford's diagnosis when they look it over.

Do you have the electronic or manual transfer case?

Maybe just me, but I love my manual transfer case... nothing but a steel rod between my hand and the shift mechanism. Less to go wrong.

Talking

I have electronic 4 wheel of course. If I had manual 4 wheel I would never have a problem.

I have ESF, and have had the stick for 4x4. Either one will clunk if your on the gas and even more so if you wheels are spinning.

I don't have a problem with the clunk as much as it jumping in and out of 4 wheel and grinding when I hit the gas when it is suppose to be engaged.

Okay so Ford took the od heap and fixed the 4 wheel. They needed to replace the vacum control swith and the left hub assembly.
