I am thinking about having my stock muffler replaced with a 50 series Flowmaster and was wondering if anyone has done this and kept the stock tailpipe. Whould I be able to tell any difference in performance with this setup or should I get new pipes installed? Thanks for the help.

I did the same, only used a Magnaflow. Works great. Your stock pipe is stainless steel, so its a waste to spend the huge amount on a new system that you won't see much of any gain from.

 

Do you remember what Magnaflow # you purchased and how much it was?
I'm interested in doing that to my screw as well.

Thanks. Is there anyway you can get a sound clip? I am gonna call the guy that is going to be doing my tint and see what other brands of mufflers he carries. I had Flowmaster 40 series on the Sport Trac that I had and it was to loud.

 

Does anyone know what size the stock exhaust tubing is?

If you thought it was too loud than get a Magnaflow muffler.

 

I did that with my 04 SuperCab. Installed the FlowMaster 50 SUV and kept the factory pipes. Sounded OK

On my 05 SuperCrew I went with SI/DO Flowmaster 50 Delta Flow exiting behind the rear wheels. Louder and mellower - deeper tone - but the least expensive way to go is just the muffler swap.

I am sure you will be pleased any way you go.

I actually have flowmaster 50 series on stock pipes... to me its too quiet. but big improvement over stock muffler.

 

I have the 40 Series flowmaster, the sound on the outside is great BUT, the drone/resonance inside the cab is terrible.

 

I don't have any aftermarket muffler on my 150 but I had 40 series SIDO on my V8 Dakota. It sounded great outside of the truck, but there was a lot of drone inside the truck. It got old after a while. I'm thinking that I want a magnaflow straight through on this truck.

I want to do this too- anyone have exact part numbers of the Magnaflow muffler they used? is it the same length as the stock one?

Did you cut off and weld the new muffler in place, or use band clamps/muffler clamps? Got any pics?

My stock muffler was huge compared to the 50 series flowmaster.
If I remember correctly the muffler has a 3 inch inlet/outlet so you just make an adapter to fit on stock pipes.

Otherwise when you replace whole thing its usually 3 inch tubing on f150s

 

Here's my 2 cents on the stock pipe thing. If/when you change out the muffler, chances are the aftermarket will be shorter(the stock is a monster) therefore they will have to cut your intermediate pipe to use as an extension and weld/attach the muffler to it. Not that big of a deal there b/c if you wanted to go back stock, you could get another intermediate pipe from Ford for about 40 bucks. Problem I found was that the pipe distal to the muffler is welded from the company so you will have to cut the muffler off where the tailpipe starts(no connections used by the company). If/when you wanted to go back stock, you will be piecing it back together. I found that if you just use aluminized pipes or buy SS, you can have them remove you entire stock muffler and tailpipe and keep it intact. That way, if you get tired of the sound or you trade the truck, you can put it back on easily. All you would need is the 40 dollar intermediate pipe to connect the muffler to the upstream pipe connection. If you want your stock system back and it's hacked up, remember that it will cost over 400 bucks to buy a new one. Many people don't care and don't plan to put stock back on. Just some FYI. I have SI/DO straight back, Flowmaster 50 series and love them.
