-11 Outside and the Windshield cracked right in half!

Hey Guys,

So it's -11 outside and that's not counting windchill. I was driving home and the windshield cracked right in half from left to right. Granted it didn't go all the way through, but it was something to see and hear.

I stopped by the dealer to have the tires rotated and oil changed and they suggested flushing the transmission and replacing the fuel filter but I'll do that stuff later.

We went for a ride along as I still have that high pitched whistle or whine that so many on here are complaining about in the cold temperatures.

The tech heard it and thinks it's the seal around the windshield that's bad and that it gets worse in the colder weather and that's what makes the sound.

So it'll go in this week to flush the transmission ($139), replace the fuel filter ($39), adjust the hood to stop a hood flutter at highway speeds, and then City Auto glass will come and replace the windshield (covered under insurance for the crack).

Hopefully that fixes the high pitched whistle in cold weather and the weather warms up to above 0.

Duke

Are you sure it not a chip or a small rock hit somewhere in the break line, it unusual for a shield to break from just cold without a reason.. even at -11...

now put a little defrost or even cab heat on at -11 with a chip in it and she's a goner for sure......

re High Pitched Whistle

I am betting you will still have the whistle after they replace the winshield. If mine is the same as everone elses, it is throttle position sensitive. I can maintain my same speed and make the noise come and go by very slightly varying the throttle position. Something is changing it's material properties when it's cold and hitting it's resonant frequency, creating the noise.

I've seen that happen a cpl of times. Usually theres a small defect in the glass somewhere. When you hit the defrost on high heat on a cold windshield like that it will happen. Gradually warm up the windshield and you'll be better off.

That stuff happens here in Arizona under extreme heat as well. Let it be 115 outside, start the car and hit the highway with the A/C on and just the slightest of nicks will cause the break to expand. Never saw a perfect windshield do it. Just one that already had a small chip. I have seen the back window shatter just setting in the heat with all of the windows up.

Oh yea, did I mention 75 degrees here today?

There is no gradual warm up at -11 degrees.... It's just friggen cold... My kitchen window just cracked. It's -2 degrees here and it's double paned with argon gas between...

What is going on? Poor quality glass? It gets to be -40 up here and I have never had a window in the house crack. Only vehicle windshields and it always starts at an existing chip.

Beats me.... Last year it was the other half of the window... I 'm calling the factory tomorrow morning.. They replace it for free..

Yeah the defrost was on full power. I know that had to help it.
