Changed My Fuel Filter
Changed My Fuel Filter
Hey guys,
I just changed out my LONG OVER DUE Fuel Filter. Truck has 56,000 miles and for some reason I had a BRAIN FADE with the fuel filter, and just havent thought about changing it.
Once I took it off, I capped the end of it to keep the fuel from running out. Got a plastic bottle and blew through it backwards and you should have seen the CRAP come out of it! I let it sit for a few hours and DANG!! Lot's of particles, and debris, even looks like a little bit of water.
Just curious where all this crap comes from, dont the pumps at the Gas Stations have filters on them to keep a lot of this junk out? Or is this just normal.... I know one thing, My Ol-Truck gonna like this new filter a lot betta!

Well it depends on where you get your gas from. Those little ma and pa gas stations usually buy gas from cheaper sources and their tanks are really old and usually have crud in them from over the years, so I stay away from them, but if your buying from a good reputable station like BP or Conoco or Chevron those places offer the cleanest fuels. I usually try and go to the newer stations because their fuel tanks are new and clean. I had a guy in one of my classes who is a fuel analyst and he told me that the best places to buy from are the newer stations and from one of the 3 places I listed above. Do you notice any difference in the way it runs now?
I do buy gas from the "NameBrand" guys... Usually Shell, or BP.... I was anticipating a little garbage but not the amount that I got out of the filter. I think I may drive about a x-tra 5min, and start fueling up at the new Shell Station.
Im on call this week, and have not driven my truck since last Sturday, Im curious to see what the difference may be with this new filter as well... Lesson Learned! Make damn sure I change it on a regular basis now.
I replaced it with a a WIX filter... Not very familiar with that brand, but from what I have gathered they seem to be pretty good! am I correct with this opinion?

If I'm not mistaken for the last 20-25 years all underground fuel tanks have been fiberglass so there shouldn't be alot of crap in the tanks. All gas ,wherever you are, comes from the same regional refinery. So ma & pa get the same gas as shell, conaco etc, its just the additives that make the biggest difference.
Correct you are...but the refinery's also make finer grades of fuel and lesser grades the lesser grades are normally purchased by the ma & pa stations and/or the smaller older stations. A friend of mine owns a his own gas station and in order for him to make money off of the gas he has to buy th lesser of grades whereas the big companies can afford to purchase the finer grades. I am just passing along info that I got from someone who anlalizes fuel and fuel stations for a living.
WIX filters are some of the best in the business they are the trusted brand of NASCAR and AMSOIL, I have always used them and have had no problems with them. just haven't had to change my fuel filter yet because I only have 7,500 miles on my 05'SCAB.

No matter how good the fuel is you have to open the tanks to fill them up. You have the human element in the final storage condition and quality. If you fill up when a truck is off-loading or soon after you will get the particals that get mixed up from the bottom.
Changing the filter is cheap insurance IMO.
