Shifter to 4L at 75 mph. Whoops!!

Well, on the way to work today, and its cold as hell up here, so about 5 min into the drive I turn on the heater, at lvl 2. Well thats not warm enough, so I go to switch it to lvl 4 and I feel my truck jerk, and kinda slow down. Wondering what the hell, I look over and see that it was in 4L. I immediatly change it back to 4H then 2H. No clunks or metal noises. i think I got away with it with no damage. Kinda funny, but scary. Is it friday yet?

You can NOT switch your truck into 4lo when you are driving. You have to be stopped and in neutral with your foot on the brake. All you did was switch it into 4 hi. Relax, and while you are on the topic read your owners manual which explains all this.

I pretty much figured that one out, not my first 4x4 cowboy. Just kinda freaked me out when I first did it, then I thought for a second. And obviously you can switch it to 4L at 75mph, b/c I did. Wether it engages or not is a different story.

X2 on this. If it truly dropped into 4lo at 75 MPH the engine would have revved itself to pieces. Not to mention the damage to the rest of the drivetrain.

I had a 97' Blazer not too terribly long ago that would randomly, on it's own, fall into 4-Hi at highway speeds.

If you didn't have your seatbelt on, it would throw you THROUGH the windshield. I owned that POS for 3.5 months -- it was in the shop 2.75 of those months.

4-Lo at 70+ would not only THRASH your motor, it would've left you HURTING like you just ran into a wall because you would've either a) hit the steering wheel or b) had bruises from your seat belt from the g-forces.

We know he knows that, but there are a select few that may have hit the switch and thought they may have done some damage. The above posts just let them know what would happen if they had.

If someone wants proof of this just drive along at about 30 MPH and then pull the shifter down into first gear. You'll see how much that throws you forward, now imagine that at 70-80 MPH. That's enough G-force to detach your retina's.

I did the same thing this past weekend but I was only going about 50-55. No jerks or clunks or anything. Like someone said, for a second you're frozen and thinking UHOH what did I do and then you come to the realization of the only way it can go into 4Lo.

I did the same thing awhile ago, went to turn my blower up and grabbed the 4-wheel drive switch instead. I'm used to having push buttons for the 4-wheel drive lol.
