Question clearance??

Not sure if this is the right place to post, if not please move. Thanks

How can the new tundra claim 10.4 inches of clearance and the f150 only has 8.1 inches of clearance with the same size tires, rims and solid axles in the rear

Could someone guide me to the light?

I don't know the specs on the new Tundra, but I am guessing that it is the weak ring in the rear pumpkin and housing. The 150 has about a 10 inch ring with lots of metal surrounding it. The Tundra probably has an 8-9 inch ring with sheetmetal thick housing. That is usually the limitations on trucks for ground clearance. I am just wondering if the new Tundra will follow the path of the Titan in the rear gear department. I know that Titans had (have) problems with these burning up under load.

I think your right about the first part. (Don’t get me wrong I wouldn't trade my 150 for a tundra) the f150 have I think a 9.75 ring and the new tundra just looked it up have a new 10.5 ring. So I don't believe that is why they are higher.

I know one way GMC got higher clearance on the hummer is because they used a geared spindle but I don't think Toyota has that.

Would their be another explanation

I agree with you. I think its because ford has a huge rear pumpkin it looks like a 3/4 ton rear end not a f-150. When i had my gears put in the shop even told me that ford has really strong rear ends in their f-150s. The pumpkin should be the lowest part on the truck so i would think that this would be what makes our clearance a little lower but thats just my opinion personally i would rather have the extra strength instead of the little bit of clearance

Has anyone else seen the tundra commercial comparing ring and pinions...It almost looks like they hired the Ford The Truth About Trucks cast.
