Another Homelink question
Another Homelink question
Well actually two questions...I've read somewhere about antennas for Homelink. I picked one up off ebay out of a 02 Maxima and there are two wires wired to it, but a slot for a third. Could this be the slot for an antenna lead?
Secondly, I plan to mount mine in the useless cubby right under the ashtray. Is this too low in the truck to mount it? While that spot is about as high as the visors in my car, I'm worried it may be too "cluttered" of an area for it to communicate with the openers. I like this spot since it'll be fairly stealthy.

I also bought one off of ebay a while back and it had 3 wires, I don't think it is an antenna, seemed like two hot wires and one ground.
I mounted mine just ahead of the dome light in front of the sunroof, works great but doesn't have allot of range. You have to be right up to the door for it to activate. Not sure how yours would work mounted that low.
Good luck !

i bought one off ebay that came out of a crown victoria. it only had 2 wires, one hot lead and a ground. i mounted it in my visor like factory. after pulling apart the visor, there is a template cut out for the factory homelink. i cut it out and the homelink module mounted perfectly in it. i have pretty good range with it in the visor. at least 50 feet or so.
My only came with 2 wires. I put mine up on that blank plate between the dome light lenses. The range is ok, about 40 to 50 feet.
You can test your location by temporarily hooking your homelink up to a power source like the battery (use some long wires) and just place/hold the homelink in the area you want and test it out. Maybe you might lose some range having it down lower in the dash, but I'm sure it will still work.

I just pulled the Homelink that I had in the tray and put a different one in an Edge pod.
(I redid the Homelink and Scangage mount in favor of a Homelink and Edge mount)
The edge pod sits about six inches higher and is not behind any steel. The other one the antenna was roughly above the radio inside the dash. This one is just behind the thin plastic of the edge pod.
Net result, the higher less shielded one has less range...
The biggest thing affecting the range is the receiver, not the transmitter.
My power gate is low to the ground so I must get to within 20 feet 'street side' of the receiver with either the hand held or either Homelink.
From the 'house' side I can be 100 feet away with either type transmitter.
The garage door with its high mounted antenna I can open from down the block using any transmitter.
So I would defiantly try it under the lighter with no extra antenna.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not too concerned about range, but don't want to limit it to right on top of it either. The garage is behind the house and the driveway runs right along the side of it. I can't park the truck inside (6ft door
) so by the time I get it backed down and into its spot I'm about twenty-five feet from the opener which gives ample time to open the door and gather my stuff up. I'm going to test it out sometime this week and if all is good then I need to paint the cover, drill and enjoy.
Chris, great idea putting one in the Edge pod. I've got an Edge, but I don't care for the big pod when it comes to prying eyes. My car has been broken into three times in past two yrs, so I'm trying to keep a low profile inside the truck. I'd love to have the Edge mounted in the dash tray, but when leaving the truck have the Edge fold down into dash and leave no sight of it. Maybe a variation on this but that would take me quite some time to do something cool like that.
