**Wont let me shift into gear?*** Anyone else?

**Wont let me shift into gear?*** Anyone else?

Well lets see the mechanics!

Just started to happen when it was cold, maybe just by chance? No less than 53 degrees though. When i start my truck up it wont let me shift into gear, it takes 15-60 seconds. My steering wheel isnt locked either, i check everytime, I'm not at a incline or decline also. It seems like it HAS to be a sensor, because i have check the usual to see if it is mechanical. But is there such a sensor?

Have you tried pressing the shift lock button?

aint b/c of the "cold" 53 aint cold...... Has been up to - 15 before windchill here any shifts into gear fine.

Seems like I've seen this one before... maybe it was a fuse issue? Might search around a bit...

There is an interlock that won't allow the shifter to move if the brake pedal is not depressed. Something in this system is your likely culprit. If it only happens when the vehicle is cold check I would start with the sensor on the brake pedal and verify that it is free to move. From there I would start looking for blown fuses or relays.

Sounds to me like he is getting the shifter to move, but it taking that long for the gear to engage. How many miles on the tranny?

The interlock is activated in concert with the brake lights. If your lights do not work or work intermittently, the interlock's operation will correspond to the lights. This assumes that the original poster is unable to move the shift lever. There is nothing on the transmission that is involved with the interlock, it's all in the dash and steering column.

If the shift lever does move normally but the transmission does not immediately engage into gear (delayed engagement), then the tranny is at fault. Check your fluid level first as this is a possible cause.

After weeks and weeks of trying to find out whats wrong i've finally narrowed it down to what it is. On the brake lever the first thing connected to it looking up is this yellow box thing. Its like a lever, when i push up it lets me shift right into gear. Does anyone know what this is? And what exactly does this thing do? Im getting tired of reaching down...pushing this thing up to set it into gear. As someone posted, do i just go to a local auto parts store and buy this "sensor"? is this thing crzy exspensive?

Thx to your gurus that are trying to help a fellow f-150 member.

Probably the brake light switch going bad. Idk if you can get it at a local parts store or if it is a dealer item but I'll bet that's the problem.

Warrantee out already ? It's that brake switch down there.I havent looked at the one on my truck but I've seen a few of them and they can be adjusted or tweaked.If not I wouldn't think it's too expensive.if I had to guess I'd say in the 800$ range.less than a thousand for sure.
