Exclamation Just got my truck out of the shop....

Late last Tuesday night I was driving back home to go hunting the following morning from school. About half way home the driver’s rear brake locked up and immediately I knew what it because it happened briefly earlier that week at school. With the whole truck shaking I pulled over and the heat coming off could be felt three feet away, it was red hot and smelled awful. Since I had seen on here before where members where having problems with their parking brake sticking I thought I was experiencing the same thing. Even though, I have not used the parking brake recently I crawled under the truck with a hammer and whacked the lever that the cable is attached to on the back side of the rotor/drum to make sure it was released. This didn't fix the problem and I had a choice to make at midnight: Either call my grandfather, wake him up, and have him bring our 22' Utility trailer and load it up or just drive it as is. I drove the remaining 25 miles home and eventually the vibration and resistance went away.

I took it in to the dealer the following morning and the service writer said he had seen this several times before and it was the caliper that was locking up. He said that they had a truck in with the same problem a week before. They had it 3 days and the following was the damage:
New rotor on driver's side and they turned the pass. side
Replaced both rear calipers
Replace all axle seals (because it got so hot)
New gear lube
All replaced under warranty for $650

The day I picked the truck up another truck had just come in with the same symptoms. So, obviously this is not a isolated problem. The service writer said they had no explanation for the problem and Ford is basically just replacing parts to replace parts. I guess I can expect to had the same problem over the next 30K and be stuck with the bill because Ford hasn't (according to the dealer) provided a solution other then replacing parts. So, heads up to all.

On a positive note after having to drive a car for several days I quickly realized how much I missed my truck. I did feel that the dealer did a good thorough job, but it seems the fix is unknown.

If it was replaced under warranty why did it cost you $650.? Am I reading that wrong in your post. Gla that worked out for you. i don't know if I had been brave enough to drive on it in that condition.
