The Switch to 4WD

I've had my 2005 Scab 4X4 for just over a year now and have used the 4WD very little. From the time I bought it, it has always been slow to engage. The light comes on in the dash in about one second but the front end doesn't lock for about 5-6 seconds. Is it normal to have such a slow response time?

Depends on what you are doing when you engage. If you are at a standstill the front usually doesn't clunk in till you start to move, if you're rear wheels are spinning or you are accelerating it waits a bit and then clunks in hard. I find it goes in best if I let off the gas and let it coast when I pop it into 4hi.

Yes it's normal. It's a vacuum controlled system so it takes a couple seconds for said vacuum to get everywhere it needs to be.

I do let off the gas everytime I put it in 4WD but still amazed at how long it takes to lock in. Maybe it is normal but I get pretty pissed off when I need
4WD to make a hill and have to stop in the middle of the hill to avoid a hard clunk.

Thanks for the response

maybe you should engage the 4wd before you start going up a visibly slippery hill.

Then there wont be a problem with a delay or the need to stop.

Ditto what cndcowboy said. Just let off gas for a half-second, and then get back on it. No need to stop to engage.

You meant to say... "for the vacuum to be removed" ...so the system can engage the front hubs. What you said may work, but may be confusing to some.
