Tranny Fault with code Help

well i was driving my truck home after work tonight and came to a stop and my o/d light starts flashing and the trans fault comes on the message board so i came home truck drove fine. shut it off and back on again and no message and drove fine. pulled the code from my edge and it was po731 which is a first gear slip. does anyone know when this means and if its bad. i called the dealer that sold me my truck and he said it could have just been a glitch to drive it and if it comes back make an appointment. also he told me to check my tran fluid which is full. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Brandon

P0731 is actually "No 1st gear."
Incorrect gear selection, depending on failure or mode and manual lever position. Shift errors may also be due to other internal transmission concerns (stuck valves, damaged friction material). Engine rpm could be higher or lower than expected.
You have to remember the edge modifies transmission behavior. So your next step would be drive around some more and see if it happens; if it does remove the edge, etc...

Bumping an old post, as i am having the same P0731 DTC.

Sunday night i buddy of mine called to tell me they had a bunch of trucks stuck and no one with a big enough truck to jerk them out. So i went down, pulled out 2 stock CJ5's that were high centered, a stock Dakota sitting on the frame, a Cherokee that is built for the desert, and a Toyota 4Runner that was buryed to the middle of the doors in the nastiest puddle there. So i pulled all the trucks out with ease except one of the stock CJ5's, the guy was talking sh*t on fords, so i tried to jerk his truck in two, then drug him out and around for about hundred yards.

With all the trucks free of the muck, i thought i would be ****y and make a run through that nasty mudhole i mentioned above. Needless to say, i got about halfway and my FX4 was stuck. With water up over my running bars i was scared to shut the truck off because my exhaust was bubbling underwater. So long story short, I had to call some friends with big trucks as the jeeps couldnt budge me, and it took a 1500 Dodge turbo diesel and an F250 Powerstroke to pull me free.

As i was leaving i got a trans fault, and noticed i had no pulling power once i was on pavement. I pulled the code with my Edge and looked up the info. My question is: Does anyone know if it could just be the sensor, whether it is internal of the tranny or external and could possibly have water in it. My trans fluid is clear and bright red, so no water or sludge, and i pulled the plug on the botton below the flywheel and it was dry. I also reset to stock tune on my Edge.

Where is the sensor located. And how much would it be to replace/fix the transmission?

i had the same o/d flash and "trans fail" appeared on the screen with the odometer. i didn't have an edge chip at the time. i was towing a 23' tt up a grade, the only thing that comes to mind is that the tranny got too hot?

That p-code "studies" the input and output speeds of the transmission, so two sensors. For one to fail, you clear it; it will fault right away if it was "bad".

The limited power you had was controlled by the "forced throttle" because of the code. The edge may be letting the TC slip more than the computer wants to see, but i don't know how edge(company) tunes so i am unaware.

~240* i beleive is the temp limit on the trans for it to fault. (same temp as the engine to go into limp mode)

And also, the trans/abs system will also fault if you power-brake at times.

Some more info on what my truck is doing that i may have left out. With the truck already running and the trans fault active, if i manually put the truck in first, it wont move, not an inch. If i shut the truck off, and restart it the fault temporarily clears, then you can feel it starting to pull itself in first then i get the fault and it automatically goes into second gear like first doesnt exist. Now if i put the truck in second when it rolling only 2 or 3 mph and shift it down to first the truck stops abruptly, like the parking brake was pushed before the truck is at a complete stop.

I'm really at a loss here and hoping for a bugged sensor or something i can fix myself, moreover i dont know what or where to look for the sensor(s).

Same thing happened to me last spring! They pulled my tranny, and the throttle body was in pieces! Metal all over the place, and the dealer ended up replacing the entire tranny with a new one! Good luck!

A little update on the transmission ordeal, the dealership has it now. I got my quote on fixing it or replacing it. It turns out that fixing it, costs insanely more than just having them install a new one.

New truck: $30,000
Lift, tires, wheels, etc.: $9,000
Destroying the valve body in the tranny playing in the mud: $3,200

Your wife giving you that "I told you so" look: priceless

Im having them just install a new one

Update on tranny issue:

$3509 For new tranny, parts, labor, and that includes the $313 for the new window switches all around that havent worked since the second week of owning the truck. New tranny came with 3 year, 75,000mile warranty. Had i went with them tearing down, diagnosing and repairing my original transmission it would have been closer to 4k for repairs and would have only been a 1 year, 12k mile warranty. All in all, im happy with new tranny and service.
