fumoto valve question
fumoto valve question
ive over tightend the plug on my oil pan too many times now and the threads about gone near the head of the bolt... so how reliable are the fomoto valves can something hit it and cause it to open while driving, i know it will make changing the oil much easier but i just dont want it to come open when im not ready for it to
Could something strike it and cause a failure? Yes. But, I think the odds of that are next to nil.
I'm running one on my truck and also one on my wife's 04' Explorer.
I originally bought one for my wife's because the boneheads at the stealership over-tightend her's and stripped it ever so slightly. As a result of that strip, I had a VERY annoying tiny drip on occasion -- just enough to stain the garage floor which really burned my bubble.
To remedy this - rather than getting a replacement plug or going back to the dealership to plea my case 4k miles later - I went with this device. I'll have one on EVERY vehicle I own from here forward...
For those of you wondering about this dohicky...

I've had a Fumoto on my 2000 F250 for about 6 years, and I had one on my 2001 SuperCrew. When the Screw got wrecked, I took the Fumoto out and installed it on my 2004 Screw. I have not had any problems, and I can't say I've ever heard of anyone having trouble with them.
You'll find the Fumoto valve on A LOT of the over the road big rigs. Those fellas put on hundreds of thousands of miles over the years, and I'm sure that they run over their fair share of junk on the road. I spent 14 years wrenching on the OTR trucks, saw lots of those valves, and never saw one dripping.
I can't swear to it, but I think they may use the Fumoto on small air plane engines...can anyone confirm that??
Buy one, you'll love it! OH and if you are afraid that it might open by itself, buy yourself a bag of the 4 inch nylon ties at the hardware store. Wrap one around the groove that the lever slides in. With the tie in place, the lever can not be lifted out of the recessed area.

If your worried about the Valve opening while driving, do what I did:
Get this:
And attach it like this:

Full info here:

And I couldn't find those specific clips locally, so I bought them from here:

Oh, and I bought the F106N (with the nipple). Then I went to NAPA and found Vacuum Caps 3/8" in size to cap the nipple end of the Fumoto Valve. NAPA part # 715-1805. So no dirt can get into nipple opening end. And with a short piece of 3/8" Inside diameter hose I can drain my oil directly into the recycle container. Installed it all about two weeks ago, and now am actually looking forward to my next oil change.

Nice suggestion JSB...
I may give that a go on mine... I bought the one that you can attach a piece of hose to (simply for ease in hitting my drain pan because I always seemed to make a mess when doing it the 'old fashioned' way'...

JSB - can you get pics of your set up?
Great ideas guys I was cursing the other day dropped the plug and the wind blew at same time thus missing the drain pan.
Flyin Jawain, F-106 is the correct part number for the 5.4 L engine and F-106 N if you want the nippled version
