37 is the diameter of the tire in inches
13.50 is the width in inches
17 is the size rim that it fits
340 is the width of the tire in millimeters
75 is the aspect ratio (so it is 75% as tall as it is wide)
17 is the rim size
13.50 is the width in inches
17 is the size rim that it fits
340 is the width of the tire in millimeters
75 is the aspect ratio (so it is 75% as tall as it is wide)
17 is the rim size
The R just means radial.
For regular tire sizes like 285/70/17
You can quickly figure the size
285 millimeters divided by 25.4 millimeters to the inch.
Or to do it fast, just figure 25.
70 is aspect ratio, or simply you take the width (285) translate to inches and multiply that times the ratio (70)
That is how high the rubber stands on the side of the tire.
To find the diameter or how high the tire is, take that figure X 2 (for top and bottom) and then add the rim size.
So 285 divided by 25.4 is 11.22 inches wide. What we call an 11 inch wide tire.
Then 11.22 x .70 is 7.85 inches.
Double that for top and bottom and you get 15.7 inches of rubber
Mounted on a 17 inch rim
This equals 15.7 + 17 or 32.7 inches tall.
Thus the tire is 11 inches wide and 33 inches tall.
So the tire could be called a 33- 11.0- 17 in the older way of looking at it.
When measuring a tire with a tape measure or yard stick you never get it quite right. The tire curves and crushes a little on the truck. Or if you put lots of air in it, it gets bigger.
Also, sizes are ‘nominal’. Or in other words, twenty 285/70/17 tires with twenty brands and twenty tread sizes will vary about an inch in height or about a half inch in width and yet still be marked the same.
So with a calculator you can figure the height width, of any tire in seconds by the numbers.
