Ethanol - E85 Impressions
Ethanol - E85 Impressions
Well, I have read enough about what people have experienced, so I thought I'd try it myself.
I ran my tank down to about 90% empty and filled up with Verasun E85. Yes, the mileage dropped from my average 16mpg to about 14mpg. Not as big of a hit as I expected. I assumed I'd see numbers around 12mpg, or so. Anyway, at 100 octane, there is a noticable difference when excellerating hard. I thought I'd tapped in a tuner. Otherwise, you'd never know it was running on E85. Very smooth idle, no funky exhaust smell, or smell at the pump, as far as I noticed.
At $0.25 to $0.30 a gallon cheaper, but a two mile per gallon hit, it will only save me about $100 bucks this year if I run it exclusively - which I won't. I can't get it locally, and it is harder to start and use in the winter months unless mixed with gasoline. I'd like to keep the $6,000 to $7,000 I spend a year on fuel here at home instead of the Middle East, but until it's available locally, I'm helpless. Just my $0.02.

fwiw, it still takes a lot of oil to produce e85 and taking into account the lower energy of e85 compared to gasoline, it's basically a wash when considering numbers from all sides, so nobody is keeping their money home instead of sending it to the middle east by purchasing corn-derived ethanol...cellulose ethanol may hold some promise in the future
