Leaking Windshield: The Saga Continues
What's up. I was supposed to hear from the Ford dealer today about my windshield leaking air. They didn't call, so I called them. The person I've been dealing with, Jim, said that he spoke to the Service manager about it, and he said that Ford did not have a fix for the problem. He said there were several other cases of excessive wind noise on the 04-06 models, and they were not able to fix those either. I suggested they let me take it to a glass expert to have it removed and resealed. They said they had done that before with no improvement. I think they know that the windshield will probably break when they remove it, and they just don't want to foot the bill for a new one. I'm starting to get a little pissed here. This is my first brand new truck, and I don't want this experience to be a negative one. And then there's the "bowtie bunch" I work with. I traded my 2001 Z71 GMC for the F-150. I love the truck, except for this windshield problem. The saga continues....
If they can identify a specific problem (i.e. bad sealant, specific leak point, etc) then the dealership can and should repair or replace the faulty part(s) as necessary. However, many dealerships are loathe to replace a windshield for a wind noise because if they can't identify a specific problem with the installation to Ford, they'll have to eat the cost of the replacement. Also, windshield replacement is an art form, and not anyone can do it, so most dealerships sub-contract the job to a local glass supplier anyways, to ensure the job gets done right. Although it sounds like you may have a legitimate beef (the wind noise), unless the dealership can justify the replacement to Ford, about the best you can hope for is to have it documented in teh service history and go from there.
Also, if the installer knows what he's doing, he can get the old windshield out without breaking it. Just takes some time, patience, and skill. Some installers lack all three!

I have thousands of dollars in glass tools and very high dollar cutout tools, with over 20 years of experience behind them and some still break....

tape off the shield across the top and both side molding, body to the glass...
covering the molding and sealing them from air... take it for a drive... this should stop the wind noise, them remove tape from the top first leaving the side taped, drive again, then one side and drive, then the other side and drive... this will allow you to pin point the noise... if its the bottom leaking air
remove the wipers and cowl.. tape off the bottom of the shield and drive...
this takes time and it why the dealer will not do it... once you pin point the noise, grab a tech from the dealer and take them for a ride untaped, then taped on the way back.... this will show them where it is and puts the ball back in there court.... and yes, unfortunately you have done there job for them and for free.....
also do the forum a favor, post in a thread you have already started on this matter, no need to keep starting new threads everytime....
Tim
there was a tread here earlier this year where someone had the same or similar problem with wind noise at 60+ mph
they found the problem in the upper left outside corner of the windshield (upper over the driver)
they found the problem to be with the fit of the gasket and the body of the truck
they used some electrical tape and made a gasket/extended the side of the gasket. in essence they smoothed the surface area it did not take much tape
Ford had no solution that I recall, in the cases if i recall correctly they dealers found no unusual condition.
search and you may find the thread

Thanks for the tips guys. Sorry about the extra posts, I'm new to web forums, and I wasn't sure of the protocol. I will definitely try the tape idea. Thanks again.
