i heard there was a wire that u can connect a switch to and turn "on" and "off" ur cluster and ur miles wont mark when its off is this true??
i know its illegal but i just wanted to know..

 

I doubt it, because that would cut the power to your cluster, and therefore nothing would work.. Also the milleage is also recorded in the PCM..

 

Your right on nothing working if you did that, the truck would run, but barely.

But where in the PCM is the mileage located? Ford doesn't think it's in there. Neither do the speedometer shops. I've done three cluster swaps for people, as well as one of my own and in each case we had to have the cluster reprogrammed, away from the truck as there was no way to find mileage from the PCM.
It would save 50-150 bucks and lots of time and effort if there was some record in the PCM. Then you could transfer it.

Cluster swaps are more for looks now, as Edge, Scangauge, will give you tons more info than any cluster.

I might know a certain someone (may not) who disconnected their chevy cluster to keep the warranty before it expires. It's working. He has no fuel gauge, nothing works. This is an 05+ Chevy.

I'm sure this will work on a Ford as well, his chevy cluster is similar to the lariats showing everything digitally...from avg mileage to the odometer reading. The cluster was just unplugged. I am sure you can just wire a switch to the power. I have heard of people doing cluster swaps on this forum, having to tell the technician at ford what their previous mileage was to program it into the cluster.

To make it clear, the cluster needs to be there to run the truck safely. Ignore lawfully. The cluster is crosswired into about fifty circuits. While I have no doubt someone could 'drive' it with no cluster, the lack of things like A/C, speedometer, gasgauge, etc. would make it less than a good idea. I suspect the truck would run in limp home mode.

Besides, it's reinventing the wheel.
Clusters for STX cost about 60 bucks plus shipping used. So just swap in a lower mileage cluster? Or even a higher mileage cluster, but then swap yours back in.

Running with the cluster disconnected just makes no sense. The gas mileage/driveability lost would never be worth the cost.

Those are ABS only. The speed is derived from the transmission based off the value of N/V. Which also controls shifts as they are MPH dependent. If you need your cluster reprogrammed because it isn't performing to the manufactures spec, you have my number.

 

 

i found out 2day that is it possible to add a switch to turn off and on the cluster the only thing is that when its off the a/c, speedometer,radio its all off too, maybe this would be helpful in long trips with the window slightly open. BUT VERY ILLEGAL!!

how did ford setup the mileage? did they have to send off the cluster or could they do it right there on the spot?

i know the year of your truck and body style is diff but i need to upgrade my 03 to an svt cluster .....

 

What's the part number for the lariat cluster?

And as for the reprogramming, the local ford dealer here said they didn't think they could do that. How did your ford do it?
