Anyone pull a stump with their truck? How did it do?
I have 8 stumps I need out from bushes that had overgrown. So the stumps aren't large by any means. Maybe a foot around at the base from a clump of 4 or 5 bushes.

I don't know what type of tree you are talking about, but stumps are hard to pull out. Before I had my 4WD I tried with an F 150 and F 250 2WD and could not pull some out. They were about 1 foot around and all the truck would do was spin. finally hired a guy to grind them out. You can have alot of fun trying. I highly recommend at least a 12 pack for the job!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's dangerous doing it with a truck. Don't use a chain because if it snaps it's going to fly through your tailgate or rear window. Same thing could happen with some ropes. Also you could sling shot the stump into the back of your truck.

I put one of these in my hitch receiver...

Then I used this on the stump...

Positioning the truck allowed me to use minimum chain.
Otherwise I used another tree.
I used a pick axe on problem roots as they exposed themselves.
Pine is easy, the hardwoods are little more work.
I just didn't like the idea of my tranny versus a tree trunk.
From my experience, this technique works for stumps up to about 18"
Bigger than that and the truck moves first.

Raoul, I have never seen that hook plug. I need to get one of those. i have been wrapping the chain around the ball and watching it closely.

Good idea is to lay something across the chain/rope half way down the line like a heavy blanket that way if it does snap the weight will pull the chain down and into the ground. At least that's what my pop told me eons ago.

or you can steal the one behind my seat.
I've got a chain that is a beast. There is no snapping it. I think it has 1/2 wide rings and heavier than snot. So I'm not worried there. If this thing snaps it would go straight down from it's own weight.
I was thinking I'd keep it in 4-lo and keep constant pressure on it while cutting the roots as it comes out. I remember doing it like this many years ago.

I've used a tow strap with the big roots cut. Give it a nice solid throttle back in 4WDL and let the tow strap absorb the energy to pull the stump out.
Chains are scary, i've launched one away from my truck before. It would of been a bad day had it come back at me.

You know it all really depends on the tree. I've pulled a few out that came like butter, and one that didn't even budge, despite 4WL and 5,000 miles of tread wear.
I always used a nylon tow strap, a chain will kill you. I think the come-along is a good plan also, it will save you from new tires and stretched transfer case chain.
that's my $0.02

what i recomend is to first dig around the stump and cut the roots that are visible and easy to do. I work for my uncle in his ranch and i do this all the time with a tractor and its stil hard. I first dig the roots and cut them and them put the chain/rope aound the stomp as low as possible and secure and then pull. Once you pull and it wont come out put the parking brake on and get out and try to chop the roots as they come up, and keep doin that until its all out. It takes longer but its safer for you and your truck. Good luck
