New Gears

I have a 04 FX4 SCREW with a 4" Rancho lift, 3.73 gears and I am adding a 3" PA body lift and 37" BFG AT's. I think I sould get 4.56 gears, but I wondering how much they typically are and how much they are to get installed.

Thanks for all the help.

I haven't been paying a lot of attention to the gear talk on here. I take it my 3.73 gears are for towing where the 4.6 is for speed. Right?

Just need some enlightenment on what gear ratios are for what effect. I'll run som searches but most of the time it's just general talk not explanation. Or shoot me a link to a site that can teach me what the ratios mean.

it really depends on what you are using your truck for and where you drive it most of the time. If you get really low gears (I hope using the terms right correct me if I am wrong) you are either hauling a lot of you have more stress on your transmission i.e. big tires, lift. If you want more launching power you can get lower gears but you will suffer top speed. What are your plans with your truck. I would say that 3.73 or 4.10 are good all around

you are comparing gear ratios (3.73) and engine displacement (4.6).

I think with the 37's I will need the 4.56 gears to make the truck feel like stock again, I don't want any issues with towing or offroading. I'm no mechanic, is this the correct thought process? Damn Joshiah you have a good looking truck, are you getting a body lift, even without one you still have a little daylight between the tire and wheelwell (I thought it would be a tighter fit with 37's and a 6-7" lift), so it still looks good.

Well I work on aircraft (USAF 14 years) and I'm just getting into trucks since I moved to Kansas and bought a house. I never needed/wanted to customize my vehicles other than installing a good sounding stereo. Now being a back out in the country (I'm from Missouri) I love to drive down every old road I see. I don't plan on getting into the deep mud but heck if I know what I'll find. Especially when there's a sign saying "DANGER UNKEPT ROAD ENTER AT OWN RISK!". Those are the fun ones with a bit of marginal adventure.

Anyways I don't really care to do 120 mph, but I want the jump to get past a car doing 50 in a 55 zone. I don't want to worry about not having the power to pull a car out of a ditch this winter. I don't tow stuff normally but there are times I've needed to pull a car around on a trailer. This spring I'm planning on installing some 33-35" tires- brand undecided. After adding the Edge, CIA, plus a new magnaflow kit is on order there's a growing itch for more power. I'm pretty sure you all know what I mean.

So if my 3.73 gears are good all round then I won't put gears on the top of my to do list.

Thanks for the links Nytehawk.

Honestly I think if you wanted a little more power you could jump up to 4.10's but good rule of thumb is you have to jump up 2 sizes to get your money's worth. Now if you go with 35's then you could go with some 4.56's for more power.
