You haven't realized yet that there are some people that do derive their enjoyment out of complaining about their pickup.

Only when some manufacturer builds a half ton pickup that does 0-60 in 4 seconds, can outhaul a Kenworth and gets 40 miles to the gallon all at the same time... will we quit seeing threads like this.

I pull my 8500 lb boat/trailer with my 5.4 SCREW 3.73 and overall I am pretty happy with the job it does. I'm not pulling grades like a PowerStroke but I just slow down a bit (50 or so) for the hills and make it up on the flats.

However, I am going to buy a diesel next year. We took my buddies Duramax on our last trip (my boat and his truck) and it ruined me. We got 15mpg average and we were rolling 65-70 all the time.

I'll either geta new SD or a new Sierra HD next spring. Sure wish the 4.5 Diesel for the 150 was closer than two years away. I love the interior and overall the 150 is a great truck.

I pull a 23-1/2 f older camp trailer and do just fine can run down the freeway at 75-80 mph sure it slows down a little on the grades but that is to be expected also pull over a 8k+ high summit and have had no prob pulling it had power to pull it ( pulled it with over drive off ) Even my son pulling his 24 f newer camp trailer was thinking about a new ford when I could pull up to his uint on the steep part of the grade ( he's pulling with a 03 ext cab chevy with computer work done ) and he is a true blue chevy man . So love my F-150 and does fine pulling for me just might think about the edge for fun and also looking to get a new trailer with a slide out 25-26 f for next year .

I pulled a 36' 7,000lb trailer about 300 miles with no real probelms after we broke transfer case on my buddies 350 powerstroke playing in the mud. This was NOT highway for about half of the trip. I went over a very slow, very tight very steep pass in the Continental Divide mountains, the 5.4 didn't miss a beat really. The guy who's boat it was was shocked how well the F-150 WAS doing, as he followed me with his front wheel drive diesel My only real complaint was how much I had to chew up my brakes since I won't downshift on an automatic tranny.

Ford REALLY needs to make a 5/6 speed manual an option for these.

As it stands I don't think that these trucks are really designed to pull loads like that all the time. Daily driver, light hauling work truck. Oh yeah, perfect for that. But if your are rotuinely pulling around over 4,000lbs a Superduty is a MUCH better choice. They will pull a house around and like it.

I regularly pull a 7K lbs toyhauler and the F150 does just fine, but its not happy about it. The truck does about 30-35 up 7% grades, cruises about 55 with overdrive off. OD is useless, just constantly shifts back and forth. I thought it would do better considering the truck is rated for 9K but I almost always seem to make it where Im going as long as I slow down. You guys pulling your trailers at 60+ must not have tranny temp gauges or you would be surprised at how badly you are destroying your tranny.

Steve, we're planning another meet somewhere in the West forum. Probably not pismo as it's too cold now, but this will be our 3rd NorCal meet in less than a year. I am hoping for a trip to the snow somewhere central, maybe.

I posted in the towing and hauling section about my most recent trip. I pulled a 29'11" TT 300+ miles and was very pleased with the trucks ability to handlethe load of 7000+ pounds. Using the wieght dist. with anti sway control makes a huge difference. I do wish I had a blower just for the extra ponies. Maybe one day. But the truck definately pulled the load awsome.

There are many 1/2 tons that can outpull us so thanks for sharing your complaints, maybe Ford will fix it before it's time for me to get a new truck. Unless there is a huge change in the F150's (powertrain) I'm not coming back...and I probably won't be looking back either. Sure the interior is fantastic but as it wears off I find myself in envy of a diesel and a ton more power. Maybe I'm getting to used to the lack of lowend, gears might do the trick but are sure to kill my highway mileage. I'm less than happy with the way the 5.4 has responded to boltons so if you are looking for any decent results, forced induction is the only way to go.

Speaking of mileage, the only reason I get fantastic mileage is by allowing truckers to pass. I dont think you should pay extra to keep up the F-150's name...I made that mistake 10-fold in modding this 5.4 3v slug. I would have been able to live with a 4 speed tranny and a beefier engine, or this engine and a 5 speed...but they had to give us the double reacharound.

What are your mods atm? Way to keep your composure btw, this forum is full of lamers ready to attack the disappointed.
FINALLY!!!! someone that agrees with me.

My only complaint was that the truck needed more power, I had it floored on inclines just to keep up speed. There were several times that the max speed I could hit uphill was 65mph. This truck desperately needs another gear, I was consistantly pushing 3500-4000rpms in 3rd and OD was useless, its like I was missing a gear. Honestly the truck needs more pulling power and a better suited trans. THe chasis, frame, brakes, etc are suited for heavy loads, now if the powertrain could match we'd be straight. Anyway here are some pics.

I had the same problem with a 23' TT and that truck was a DOG! No one will understand the problem untill they actually try doing it. The people who say they've done it and they had no problems, aren't towing the load they say there are (if they even tow)! I had my truck floored with the trailer loaded and the max speed I hit was 43mph, it kept droping from 35-43mph. These trucks are slugs!!!!

I think my F150 tows like a champ 75mph up grades with either my 21ft Wakesetter loaded up with all the gear is close to 4k or Our 23ft Crownline LPX we keep at Lake Powell wich is a little heavier. I think the 4.56 gears help out a ton. I have went the diesel route and I love the power but they are just a little to clumsy feeling around town as a daily driver. There is always room for improvement in any factory truck but at the end of the day it is still a half ton pick up that shouldn't be purchased if you want to pull real heavy loads all the time.

I feel your pain. It's a simple fact: The 5.43V is an under-achieving engine. I think the problem is actually the transmission or the shift logic or something. I really don't see how a 5.4 V8 can't pull light loads. My truck with 3.55's struggles to pull a 3000lb trailer up hills. I'll get another try at trailering tomorrow. I'm going to the hills of NC & TN tomorrow towing a 6X12 enclosed trailer. It has 2 motorcycles & gear in it. I just bought it 2 days ago so I don't have it set up fully. I'm planning on cabinets and a spare tire rack. The last two times I took this trip, I wasn't impressed with my trucks performance. This time around, I have low expectations so as long as I get at least 14MPG I'll be happy. Until they stuff a diesel in the F-150 or get this engine sorted out, this is my first & LAST Ford.

Another fact you must remember is that Ford hands out that funny Jonestown Kool-Aid to all it's brainwashed faithful. No matter what you say, there will be people who simply can't believe that a Ford truck has no power. The current ones don't and that's simply a fact. My dad had a rental truck with the 4.6 & I could not believe how much of a slug it was.

KC-10 FE out...

I've got a 12' haulmark and I have to leave o/d off at all times or it shifts like crazy. I was planning on getting a 20' haulmark edge next spring but I might have to reconsider that. I would have gotten a powerstroke but I am waiting til the new 6.4-liter comes out in 08.

You must have had a v6 if your truck wouldnt pull a 23 footer. Seriously the 5.4 Will not win any races going up long steep grades but as far as not being able to runover 43mph something was absolutely wrong. I pulled my 30ft 304 miles any it pulled great. JMO.
