Horrible metal/metal noise! help

Hello All,

I have a 06 f150 with 13,500k on it, about 6 month ago while driving to a wedding out in LI I notice a little pulsating coming from the steering wheel mixed with a very slight whining/screeching noise from the front end of the truck. Brakes applied brakes not applied makes no difference the pulsating is the same and so it the noise. Since then that has happened maybe 4 more times, now on top of that 3 weeks ago while driving down the road out of the blue it sounded like something fell from the front of the truck and hit the road and i was dragging it, lasted for about 4-6 seconds and stopped also you could feel a very slight shudder in the steering wheel, pulled over inspected all that i could with no flash light and it being dark out went on my way. i though i may have ran something over and was dragging it down the road until it fell off. Well 2 days ago while coming back from lunch, the same exact noise and steering wheel movement happened, this time my Boss was with me and his first though was that i hit a something metal and it got caught up under the truck, well once that happened a second time in 3 weeks i knew something was up, i planned on getting it to the dealer next week, on my way home yesterday 2 second before pulling in my driveway bam! sounded like the engine hit the ground dragged it for a few feet and fell off. So now it sitting at Ford and the tech called me and said before he looked at it he could almost guarantee me its the brakes and that it would not be covered under warranty. So just wondering if anyone has any idea what this could be, i personally don't see it being the brakes but I'm not a mechanic so who knows, but 3 times in 3 weeks with no sign of bad brakes any other time and this doesn't happen when i apply the brakes its just happens and last for a few seconds then stops, any ways I'll update this at lunch time when the Tech calls me back after he looks at the truck

Is it a 4WD?

You might have an IWE solenoid problem. The front hubs are held in 2wd by a vacuum and the noise might be the hubs trying to engage into 4wd. Next time it happens, engage the 4H and it should turn off like a switch (below 45mph of course). Do a search for grinding or IWE and you should find more answers.

Good luck.

why wouldnt be covered on warranty? They might be just bringing up excuses to not look at the truck. If you cant figure it out I would just bring it in anyway. an 06 with 13K shouldnt be makeing noises like that.

thanks ! you know what i said that to my co-worker this morning that the feeling of the steering wheel and noise is the same as when i would try to manually throw my old jeep wrangler into 4wd you get that nasty sound and the vibration in the wheel. Thanks for the reply and it sounds like you might be right on the money

yeah the trucks already at the dealer, I was thinking the same thing about the warranty although i know brakes arent covered, with so few miles i would think they would be covered under defected catagory ?

Although the brake pads aren't covered, the major portions of the brake system should be as a safety issue. If something serious like a rotor or spindle is starting to come apart at 13K, and your dealer tries to blow you off, I would contact Ford and/or an attorney.

CHAPTER 2

ok so here's the scoop, they never called me yesterday around lunch like they said, i ended up going over to the dealer after work to see what was up, the truck was still sitting in the same spot never touch. Now this was there decision for me to bring the truck in that morning not mine, anyways they got backed up or something oh well. When i got there the service department had left for the day with no communication to me that my truck hasnt been looked at, so another day of wait to see what the story was. When i got into work this morning there was message left yesterday when i left asking for another day to look at the truck, and that if they dont get in touch with me the keys will be locked in the truck (i got the keypad). So around 10:45 they call and ask for the code so they can get into the truck so they can take a look, so at this point i tell the guy i have a better desciption of the problem, and give him the info in here. His reply ok no problem we'll take a look. So i'm feeling confident that this will be fixed now.

2:55pm This is Brewster Ford we looked at you truck and couldnt find anything wrong, brakes look ok and there was no grinding noise, we also performed 2 recalls you needed which were covered under the warranty and we only charged you 1/2 hour labor to check out the brakes. ME : ok no problem thanks

So i leave work at 3 and go to the dealer about to cause hell, i couldnt get the service manager because he was gone, so i got to talk to the GM who was very good, after i explained my story the *** kissing started to kick in, he promised that the trucked would be worked on first thing in the morning and he would have me driving home in a free loaner. I didnt want that tho, i just wanted the 47.50 plus the 3.74 in tax removed and my keys so i could get the hell out there. So i got my keys drove away and about 8 miles later BAM! same noise, so i called the next closest Ford dealer in Mahopac and have an appointment for Tuesday, i explained to the guy that talking to the people in Brewster is like pissing in the wind and all i want is an honest inspection. He also said that he hears alot of horror storys about the Brewster Dealership. Anyways alot of frustration these last few days but hopefully it will be resolved next week.

Oh and to top it off i got the bill in front of me.
TECH States mileage in 13751 - mileage out 13757 (and about a quarter tank less gas)
Road tested truck and tested brakes no noise at this time

Well! My mileage as it sits in my driveway 10 miles from the dealer is 13748
so maybe the *** was in the wrong truck!

I had same problem and just had it fixed. Print out this thread and hand them the part about the TSB and how to fix. It should do the trick.
