odd question can y'all help?

okay- ive had my xc2 91 tune on for about about a month now- been getting a bit of belt squeal going on during accel- is this a bad thing? second, (the odd q) my battery is leaking acid from the terminal posts since loading 91- the weather's been a bit cooler over the month so i dunno- theres no way the 91 tune & the engine changes could result in this could it?

thanks
J

My belt started to squeal a little with my Edge. Luckly I'm under warranty and the dealer replaced it free with a new tenionser pully. The oem belt sucks. If your out of warranty get a new Goodyear belt to replace it with.

I have learned from here that Ford has had some battery issues. I would have never guessed that from my parents truck. The oem battery lasted 11 years. But I'm seeing a few people here having problems. Get a new battery. I don't see any way the tuner could have caused this problem.

I remember reading somewhere that Mike recommended changing out your stock belt when you install a tuner. I can't remember the exact reason but I think it has something to do with the higher shift points.

The Gatorback belt is by far the best quality serpentine belt, and will have much better grip on the pulleys.

What's happening now is that thanks to a combination of the increased power and the quicker, tighter upshifts from the performance tuning, the low-grade factory serpentine belt just doesn't have enough grip on the various pulleys & idlers in the accessory drive system & so it squeals during heavy-throttle upshifts & downshifts - a simple belt upgrade will immediately eliminate the belt squeal.

Not too long ago, we updated our custom tuning documentation that we send out to all of our Troyer Performance custom tuning customers to include that info as well, so they'll already be aware of that the first time they hear it, and know what to do right away.

This is actually something that some of these trucks do even in bone-stock trim - just simple belt squeal, and the Gatorback takes care of that ASAP.

Good luck!

well, got the gatorback installed this morning- wow- no more turbo-spooling, blow off valve sound between 4-5k+ rpms and shifts-- and the truck seems to pull harder in that range since the belt is actively gripping the pulleys...
-guess i should've re-read troyers install docs- thanks for the heads up on that one- heres to it J

I wouldn't ignore the battery. If that is acid leaking, it will tear up whatever it leaks onto. Also the fumes from it will eat things up too.

okay- thanks- i will work on it when i get home- any clue why it would be leaking from around the posts- if it was overfilled, wouldn't it have leaked much sooner (got the battery oh, back in Dec. 05)

Only thing I can think of it's a bad battery, either that or not venting properly and caused it to push out there.

I just remember what happened when I had a battery fall over in the trunk of my car years ago. It ate off the paint, rusted the metal, ate a gasket of one of the cover plates, and just generally tore it up. All in the matter of a couple of days.

the belt is $35- picked it up at my local parts shop- then took it over to ford, since there aren't many auto shops around- cost me $30 for install (30 mins labor) i s'pose if you have a belt tensioner and some mechanical ability you could do it yourself, but i dont have the tools, the time, or enough experience under the hood to screw with somethin like that

Hey,

I am wating on my EDGE, and am hoping that I don't get the squeal from the OEM belt, but if the truck feels like it's pulling harder, maybe it would be worth the $65 anyway.

Anybody know what size (and rib #) I need for my '04 5.4L ?

You get the squeal eventually even without any programmer. Happened on my current and my 01. Just the belt leaving skid marks when the rpms change drastically.
