Quick question 4x4 low.

This is my first truck and it is great I just have one question. When I engage 4x4 high it's light goes on but when I switch to 4x4 low, nothing happens. I know there is a 4x4 low light because it comes on when the I switch on the ignition. I'm assuming the light is supposed to come on when I flip the switch to low. Is there a way to test whether low engages? Thanks.

you should feel and/or hear it engage...are you engaging it while in neutral per the manual?

To shift to 4lo:
Truck at a full stop,
truck in nuetral,
foot on the brake,
take switch to 4lo
a few seconds later you are in 4lo, light should come on and you should fell the difference with the increase in torque.

That is a statement that can't be posted enough around here. I've lost count of how many times this same 4x4Low question has come up around here.

It is worth reading so you know the limits of the low too.

"What I can't do 55 in low?"

Just remember

Don't EVER put that thing in 4Lo (or 4Hi, for that matter) unless you are in snow or mud. Rain doesn't count. On anything but snow or mud, you'll tear up your drivetrain in 4wd. Remember these are 4wd not AWD.

Even on straight roads? I've been advised by several Ford mechanics that I should engage 4 wheel drive about 10 miles per month and if road conditions are dry, to ONLY do it on straight roads, no turns (obviously).

I did read the owners manual guess I just kinda missed it . It was easier to post on here than run out to the truck and look in the manual.

I do know not to use low outside of mud, snow, etc.

Thanks again.

Ummm.....

I 4x4 off road all the time. No snow or mud on the trails. It's NEVER hurt my drivetrain. My 85 Bronco went 140K, my F250 went 196K, my 96 Bronco is at 195K right now, and my F150 is at 36K. Never had an issue 4x4 on dry trails off road.

Just clarifying that you don't HAVE to have mud or snow.

That's why you should download an owners manual in pdf format to search. Makes it a lot easier to find stuff than paging thru the owners manual. You can download one from

www.motorcraftservice.com in the owners section. There are other places that have them too. Including MYFORD.
