2004 5.4 is a great truck

I bought my xlt 2wd truck in November 2003, built in Kansas, 2004, 5.4, tow package, flareside. I have also had 78, and 93 f150's with the big 8 engines. Just got back from a 800 mile fishing trip and started thinking about how great this thing runs. Alot better than the previous trucks. The big 8 cruises at 70 mph in OD towing my 2000 lb boat like it"s not even there at 2000 rpm. I get 18 mpg with the boat and usually around 23mpg without it. Stopped at wayside and checked fluids and trans fluid wasn't even really hot and it was 85 degrees out. This truck isn't even working hard. The boat ramp where i launched was quite steep and she pulled the boat out like it was only the trailer behind. Besides oil changes the only thing she was in for in the last 3 yrs was for the clutch packs that had to be replaced when i first got it. Guess alot of people had that problem. The brake dust is bad but that will go when i replace with new better pads in the future. I can't believe how quiet it is when you close all the windows. Just thought i would post this for anyone thinking about buying the new f150. I think it's the best truck i've had so far. (knock on wood)John, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

I second that!

With all the negative posts lately, it's good to see some positive ones! Glad you enjoy your truck as I do mine!!

I must agree other then my Lighting my FX4 is my first real fullsize truck that I use for everyday driving. The L was a weekend toy. Other then the HP differance I love the new interior and the stiffer frame. It is queiter in the inside I agree but the second skin I added to the doors and rear cab does not hurt either. I supersharger in the future is a possibility after i get some other mods done first. I miss the crap out of my L but I dig my FX4

Says John: "I get 18 mpg with the boat and usually around 23mpg without it. "

Ya, I like my '04 F150 too, but I only get 13 mpg while towing my 2,000 pound boat, and 18 withOUT the boat. I have the Screw, 2wd, 3.73, with tow package. Maybe that explains the 5 mpg (28%) drop in gas mileage compared to you. Maybe not.

Then again, your mileage is extraordinarily good, waaaay better than the EPA ratings, and waaaay better than any other F150 I have ever heard of. Care to share your secret to such good mpgs?

All in all, a great truck. No complaints at all from me. Great stereo, comfort for up to 6 adults. Works hard: yesterday, I pulled a 60 foot downed pine out of the woods, easy as pie.

Love my F150,

CW

I agree too...it's just a shame that the only time you hear from a 2004 owners are when they are complaining about problems. Mine was built in June of 2004, so technically it's almost a 2005.

I was getting 23mpg or so before I was lifted and I'm 4wd, and near full bolton status so with a 2wd I'm sure he's telling the truth. Then again, I had to travel about 55-60 to get that, @ 17 my mileage would drop way down. I'm also a supercrew on 3.73's. With 37" Mud Grapplers I'm hitting around 21mpg @ 55mph, don't call bs until you've used cruise control @ that speed for a long trip.

I'm glad people complain, hopefully they know what to fix like the last body style (this is much improved). I want more power, that's for sure. Maybe some stronger components for those who like to offroad, or maybe this is the wrong truck to wheel with.

My 04 fx4 was a K.C. truck. Only problem power window gear broke. Nothing major. Again Knock on wood.

The few unhappy Ford owners definitely make a lot more noise than the satisfied masses. When your sell almost 1 million trucks a year, there are bound to be a few thousand troublesome trucks out there.

I've owned well over a dozen Ford trucks and have only had major mechanical problems with a '94 Ranger I bought in well used condition. Sure, blow a plug here and there, electric mirror motor died and the rather common EGR faults are no big deal.

I just wish I knew the secret of getting 23 MPG highway. The BEST I ever got from an F-150 was 21.5 MPG my 4.6L SCab 2WD. My wife doesn't even get 23 MPG with her V6 Sport Trac.

I love my truck. May not get the greatest gas mileage, but then I only live about 2 miles from work, so I don't use much gas anyway.

Well, I sure do envy you guys who get 23+ mpg in your 5.4L F150, and 18 while towing. The only way I could do that in my 5.4 F150 would be to change the speedo gear, or maybe only measure the mileage when coasting downhill. Believe me, I have tried. Tow my 2,000 pound boat, and I get 13, maybe 14 mpg, tops. And that's going 40-50 mph, with NO cruise control. I find that I get much better mileage without cruise than with it. that's because the cruise causes a shift out of OD when going up a hill. We've got LOTS of big hills here in east TN.

Love my '04 Screw! And it runs on regular; $2.64/gallon on my last fill up.
