Advice on buying an F-150

Hey all, new to the forum, and I know that this is an F-150 forum, but I need some honest advice on possibly the purchase of an F-150. I have been looking for about 2 months for a new truck, and though I'm not brand loyal, I've always had GM pickups. I have test drove an F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, Nissan Titan, and the Dodge Ram 1500. All in a supercab (extened cab in GM) 4WD with the big motors (Ford 5.4L), (Gm 5.3L) and (Dodge 5.7L Hemi) Now price isn't a huge issue, but I cannot afford a Diesel and I don't want to spend a bunch, but I was wondering how your F-150's stood up to mainly the GMC Sierra/ Chevy Silverado. I have mainly ruled out the Dodge ( Junk IMO), and the Titan is a nice truck, but they cost as much as a Diesel Does, and they have horrible resale value. The Gm's all come with 3.42 rear end gears now, and I don't really like them, they feel like they have to work very hard for the same amount of power. The Ford that I am looking at I felt was the best truck of the bunch, but I love to research this stuff before buying. The F-150 I have in mind is a S-Cab 5.4L Trition 4WD FX4 with 3.73 gears. My questions are: What do you think of the truck compared to the competition? What gas mileage are you seeing with this motor/truck combo? Would you recommend the F-150 over the GM 1500 Z71 5.3L pickups? Thanks for any advice you can give - Josh

Its actually around 35,000 MSRP, it has the 18" wheels, non-audiophile sound system, non-leather. They are around 10,000 off MSRP too, so that makes it around 25,000.

10k off msrp would be a pretty stout deal, jump on it. I just purchased an 06 SC Lariat 4x2 for 26k after T.T.T It was stickered at 31.5k so I figure before taxes they came down 7k off msrp.

This was the closest one I could find to match your MSRP in my geographic area, just trying to send some info your way. If you are finding an msrp of 35k, then it seems reasonable ot assume that it could be had for around 25k if this truck above is going for 28k.

Take Care

f150 - moderate gas mileage, rides great, good looks (opinion), ok power. good lucking truck you can use for work and or show off to your friends

chevy - before the 04+ f150s, i believed GMC/chevies to be the best riding best handling (stock) trucks on the road. they get the best gas mileage out of everything (except toyota, and i hate toyota). my beef is the million year old interior (redesign coming, so that doesnt matter anymore) and the ridiculous square wheel wells. if you are going up, youd need much more lift than the competition to fit similar sized tires

dodge - ugly. pitiful gas mileage. horrible interior. fast.

nissan - cheap interior, weak little needle axle, horrible mileage. incredible power. cheap price (without all the options)

I drive a 2006 gmc for work. It has the 5.3 and it is gutless compared to my 04 f150 with 5.4. It does ride a bit smoother but it feels like i'm driving a 95 chev. I just don't like the interior. Also sometimes i have to go offroad a bit and that damn chev is so low that you can't hardly cross a ditch. The Dodge get like 6 mpg with that engine. So i would count that out. Never drove a Titan so i don't know what they are like. Except that they are ugly.

Now that i think about it their should be the ugly class of trucks. You know the ones that don't really fit anywhere. Like the Honda

My experinece is with 4x2s, so a little different. I traded in an 02 Silverado for my Ford. The Chevy gave me 3 years and 75,000 pretty much trouble free miles and at the time, thought I might be making a mistake trading it off. My Ford is quieter, smoother, and gets slightly better gas mileage even though it is a Super Crew and the Silverado was an Ext. Cab. My Ford is just built better and besides, they look better.

Kinda obvious since I purchased the F150 over the others.

I use my truck for towing and the GM frames are just too flimsy for that and the GM engines just don't have the low-end grunt of the 5.4 (IMHO).

I'm not a big Dodge truck fan and the mileage is poor.

Nissan - well, it's just ugly, and I didn't think that little bitty rear end would stand up well to towing (which it apparently hasn't by judging other forums).

I have a SuperCrew with the 5.4 and 3.73 4x4. I get about 15 in mixed driving and about 17 on about 80% highway. I haven't really had any highway only trips without lugging 5500 lbs behind me, so I can't comment there.

You bet!! My F150 rides, tows, drives super and gets good gas mileage to boot (for a 6000 lb brick). Besides, the F150 is the absolute best-looking truck out there...well, maybe it's a tie with a loaded up F250 SD Lariat.

I went from an 02 GMC 1/2 ton regular cab to an 04 FX4 SCAB, both with 3:73s. The GMC did better off the line with a trailer attached and did better on hills . Both haul well, just the GM seemed to pull a little better; it may have been due to the lesser weight of the cab configuration though. The GM was about 1 mpg better in town and when pulling, about the same unloaded on the highway. The GMC and the Ford were/are very reliable.

The Ford interior is nicer, but the GMC seats were more comfortable on a long trip. Since you liked the Ford best of the trucks you drove, you should go for it. Also, with the new GM body coming out soon, the current style GM value will likely drop like a rock once the new truck is available.

Just my opinion but I'd go with the Ford. The GM's interior is just too plain and old looking for the price tags. The trucks "feel" faster but that is a combo of being lighter in the current form and a harsher ride than the new F150. The Ford is also the best looking truck out there right now IMHO. Couple that to the new extended service paln Ford is offering on thier trucks, the fact that the Chevy is going to have a redesign really soon so the resale value will drop, thee poor choice of gearing in the Chevy's, you get the point. But to further illustratee:

My soon to be father in law is a Cheby loyalist and is looking for a new one but is now thinking of getting away from them as even his V6 is barely beating the gas milage of my V8 in city driving before the mods went on.

Also, a good friend has a '06 2500HD Crew cab and is constantly ticked off when he rides in mine due to the interior. Well, and the turning radius of a Ford vs. a Chevy.

Finally, not quite the same comparison, but my better half is thinking about maybe getting a new Expy or Tahoe. With the displacement on demand and new design for '07 we decided to take some comparison test drives. As background she grew up loving Chevy trucks. I didn't say a word and after we drove the Tahoe she said she wouldn't buy it. The stearing felt too heavy, as did the brakes and the power just wasn't there. Especially compared to the Expy. The new interior was very nice, but it too has gained some pork to thee old style. If that translates into the new P/U's, theen they willl have some catching up to do still.

As for the other's, I'll never own another Dodge due to a bad personal experience so I can't comment on them except for the Fugly headlights and I haven't driven I Titan but the exterior design is blah to me. For actual tech reasoning I have none to add on those two.

My truck is a '06 Supercab 6.5ft bed 4x2 with the 5.4L. Gas mileage from the factory new was about 11 city and 14-15 hwy. After the combo of breaking it in and adding the mods I see around 13.5ish MPG city (Los Angeles, so all stop and wait, then tap gas and hit brake pedal, lol, so the worst of the worst) and have been getting pretty consistently 20 MPG hwy at 75-80 MPH. Also, after the mods I have spanked a few of the SS Intimadator's that live near me.
