Just Finished a Focus group for FORD
1. A hybrid F150, now that would be worth a trade-in...but not to the tune of $4,500. I'd have to have some seriously good MPG to recoup the extra cost over the regular 5.4.
2. 5.5 V8 @ 350 HP is still pretty sad. You could accomplish that with a 5.4, AF1, Maggie exhaust and Troyer XCal2...and save $500 plus the loss of money on a trade in.
3. A diesel would be cool for the guys who tow a fair amount, but nothing heavy enough to justify a Super Duty. But if you don't tow at least once a week then it's be useless to pay extra and not be towing anything...much les, the cost of diesel will always be expensive.
4. Either way, our 5.4s will see an incredible amount of depreciation when the new engines come out. It's depressing as I've already done a ton of work to this truck. Why can't I have just three more years of "current technology glory"?

is the hybrid engine going to be the hydraulic compression type that was discussed a few months ago... the inertia of the truck accel/decel forces the hydraulics open or closed, storing energy to assist in accel decel next time, etc?

A) Diesel fuel has been cheaper than mid-grade and in a lot of cases low-grade unleaded here in CA for most of the past year and a half. Also, as more diesel vehicles come online due to demand we may see a decrease in cost as part of it's higher cost is from a lower demand in a non-commercial enviroment.
B) Diesels generally can beat the snot out of a gas engine for longevity in an abusive enviroment (like a work truck for example)
C) Diesels can be tuned to a severe degree and blow the doors off of a lot of vehicles, just look to Europe at all the fast as heck diesels they run over there. I rode in a Mercedes diesel that had a sub 4 second 0-60, and it was an E class station wagon lol, yeehaw!
D) Diesels now a days hold their vaalue better due to the longevity of the engine, just check out autotrader.com for used F250's and see the price difference, yikes.
E) Diesels can be converted to biodiesel pretty easily. I'll chock this up to a tie for E85 with the gassers, I just like to see alternative fuels being honestly considered. No matter what, at some point we will run out of those old Dino bones and need to think of what to do. That could be very far down the line, but as consumption increases that line comes ever closer. As well as the issues of getting such an important part of our nations infrastructure from abroad.
If the F250's weren't so behind the game to the F150's interior, I'd probably be driving one now. All said and done, my next truck will most likely be a diesel. I hope the diesel does come out in the F150 as I do mostly light duty with the truck. I also hope it comes out in 2009 so that when I trade this one in in 2011-2012 they will have had a few years to see what kinks may come up and work on them.
I feel your anger on not having the new cool, but hey, that's life and you;ve got a reall nice truck to live it in.

Thanks for making it short Nick! You coming to pismo?
The diesel in the LCF won't see use in an F150, it's not smog friendly enough.
Engines aside, next focus group you go to, can you ask if they'll put them together a little better? I'd appreciate it.
