Brakes hate saltwater!
Brakes hate saltwater!
Well i have 25,000 miles on my f150 and today i had to change the rear brakes. they were totally gone no pads at all, they grooved the rotors pretty good. They just started to make noise two days ago. I went ahead and changed the frint ones also. The front brakes weren't that bad about half or a little more was gone. I always thought that the front brakes wear out quicker than the rear. So I think the excessive wear is from taking my boat out. With the boat ramps here almost everyone has extendable tounge trailers, but mine is just a trailer so everytime launching or pulling the boat out my rear tires usally go into the water. I wash them down when i'm done but i think this has caused the excessive wear, because the rotors were rusted badly around the edges. I also had to kick the left rear tire off because it was seized to the rotor. So I guess I need to rinse the truck off better from now on.
So has anyone else had this problem. Could the excessive wear be from the lift, because of the weight shifting and the much smaller brakes in the rear not being able to handel the extra load.

not sure about the weight issue but salt water isnt good for any metal. You should clean your rims too after they get dipped in the water. Or at least spray them off with fresh water. esspecially if you have chrome rims.
Well rotors by themselves seem to rust up overnight, add saltwater and I'm sure that makes it worse. Also wearing the rust off the rotors is probably harder on the pads that normal braking. Might want to think about replacing the rotors too, or at least get them refaced. Did you pull off the rotors. If they are as bad as you say, what has the saltwater done to the e-brake?
Pull all your wheels and put some anti-seize between the wheels and rotors. For some reason all newer cars and trucks seam to have the same problem of the wheels getting stuck to the rotors. Mostly with aluminum wheels. I use it and haven't had a problem yet. I had to go over my brothers house and help beat his wheel off with a 2x4 and a sledge hammer. He uses it now to.
