Towing a car...what do I need to know??

Ill be towing my 66 mustang in about 1-2 hours from now. I havent reallly towed anything yet on the street. I rented a car dolly this morning and bout a 7" drop hitch (It still isnt low enough ) Is there anything I should know before I take off? Should I put it in overdrive?

Also, those of you familiar with these dollys is it neccessary to take of the driveshaft on the car being towed? I took it off anyway just to be safe because I have hear it could ruin your tranny. Is that true?

The few times ive towed a car I always went with a full tailer from uhaul. The area that I had to tow was pretty flat so i kept the overdrive on. Now that was with my 03 f150 never towed a car with the new 06.I like the full trailers from uhaul since they have brakes on them. To me the dolly is just an wreck waiting to happen. The biggest thing you have to remeber is that you have to give your self a little extra space for stopping. Good luck with it.

If you get in an excessive pull turn the overdrive off. The reason you turn it off is so it doesn't shift back and forth all of the time. You can tell by feeling if you are hurting anything in overdrive. Also, when you load the car, experiment a little with position. Too far forward, and it will hit the truck too hard and squat it. Too far back, and it will "squirm going down the road. I towed a full bodied '74 Nova all over the place with a 2000 RC 4.6 with no problem. I had a spot marked on my trailer where I would stop the back tires, and if I missed it even by an inch or two it made a huge difference. It seemed like it even made the trailer easier to pull when I got it in the right places.

Oh yeah, one more thing, just watch what you are doing. If you think you are about to run over something, just get out and look before you do.

He's using a two wheel dolly 3valve so the front wheels only go on the trailer. You are correct in removing the driveshaft but be sure and plug or duct tape the tranny end so the fluid doesnt run out. I've used a dolly before and its really pretty easy. Main thing is leave more room for stopping and swing a little wide around corners and you'll be fine.

the fluid did run out. I let it run out when I pulled the driveshaft. Is it okay that there is no fluid in there? Ill probably put some tape or something over the tranny so paint and crap doesnt get in there

The only advice I can give is, if you are going to be towing, don't have those FAT Chicks in the back again. You don't want another flat tire.......

No you can tow it with no fluid in the tranny since its not turning at all. Is it an automatic or standard? Just don't forget to refill it before driving again or it will be P.S. Just happened to think...how are you going to get the car up on the dolly if the driveshaft is unhooked and the tranny's drained already??

Yep, it is. Just make sure that your shift firmness/pressure isn't set too high, like 10 or higher. While towing I run mine on 5.

What color are you having the stang painted?

I have a tow dolly. I've towed a few time with it. Remember to check everything after a few miles. On time I was towing and found the straps loose. Also it's hard to back up a tow dolly so try to leave yourself room to turn around. Dollys are different than trailers to back up. My Dolly has a pin to remove so the wheels on it turn with the road. It's a lot easier to remove that pin before you load. Don't turn to sharp. I was towing my dads Suzuki and tried to turn to sharp and the drivers side wheel came off the dolly. It was strapped down tight but the trailer turned more then the Suzuki could keep up with. Have a good trip.
nditech, you can get electric brakes on dollys you just don't see it on all of them.

Thas cool never knew that. I just figured that since it only had two wheels that it would be a waste. The other reason I used trailer is that my ins would cover any damages if I got in a wreck. They said they would not cover a tow dolly.

Lock out OD if the tranny starts hunting between 3rd and 4th.
